Weight of this Record: 148 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity & Info: Rare: I consider this to be one of the most elusive in The Doors’ UK catalogue. The final album issued in the mono format. This copy on offer is a bit of a bit of a curate’s egg: the good news is the record has hardly ever been played, of that there is no doubt at all. The bad news however is side one has major pressing water-marks, or some call them ‘heat-marks’, whatever, they appear as large dulls to the record’s surface. The owner of this record said he returned the record to the shop but found the only other example available was the same, if not worse. He decided to keep this one because the sound emitted from the pressing flaws were not excessive, in fact anything unwanted is quite light and only really can be heard on the quiet passages of the first two songs with traces on the third. ‘Love Street’ has the most, but again hardly excessive. But I do not make a habit of offering records that do not play nigh-on perfectly and only the scarcity of this title allows me to do so here. These dull areas are quite expansive but it seems only one has any audible sound and it’s relatively quiet, but can be heard. On less sensitive equipment it will be fainter still, my LP12 takes no prisoners and reveals all. Side two is unaffected and plays pretty much to perfection as does a high percentage of side one. The marks are not pretty and this is not a copy for the discerning collector or audiophile listener, can I make that quite clear? The good news is the total lack of distortion or mono groove wear and lack of pops or clicks. The sound emitted from one of the marks is a light, brief ‘woosh’ type of sound, I guess experienced viny listeners will know what I mean, sound is not that easy to describe and I rarely have to mention such things. But not to offer this rare classic would not be fair, a lot of collectors who are not prepared to pay huge prices for near ‘perfect’ copies will really enjoy this ‘compromise copy’. The light, sporadic sound, as stated only really heard on the sufficiently quiet passages on the affected area, does not spoil the music to any great degree and is far less irritating than clicks that will affect so many mono albums of this era. This plays way above it’s looks, any other marks are just a tiny few ultra fine surface hairlines that have NO effect on sound which remains very high. So not a copy for the purist or connoisseur collector, but one for the more average music lover who wants a rare, valule-for-money example. So if you have any doubts on this one, do not bid, simple.

Brief Info: The Doors are one of my favourite bands of all-time and I will rarely even consider offering any of their albums that fail to please me. As stated above, this is not a ‘looker’ on side one with a around seven pressing marks on side one of varying sizes. These ‘heat’ or ‘water’ marks appear as dulled areas and are not bag-rash. Colosseum’s ‘For Those About to Die’ and Kaleidoscope’s ‘Faintly Blowing’ are two well-known albums known to mainly only exist with these type of pressing problems. Some sound, some do not and considering the amount on side one of this record, the amount of unwanted sound is really quite low and mild. Most is lost in the music but some mild sound can be heard on the quiet passages up to track three, thereafter little to nothing is heard and side two plays superbly. This was The Door’s third album and last available in both mono and stereo formats, the US version is immensely rare in mono and is one of the most sort-after albums there by collectors. The mono version, as this, is never easy to find, thus I have no qualms in offering a less-than-perfect copy for that reason alone. Another brilliant album, and in the US, one of their most popular as their reputation, especially live grew. This copy has no insert and the cover has some wear too – clearly a copy for the right collector but not for all and my opening bid is kept very low for any collector to decide its worth. Please do not bid if you are unsure on the descriptions that make it clear, this is far from a perfect example.

Cover Grade and Format: VG an unlaminated gatefold format, NO insert included with this copy. This has the correct EKL mono Cat. No as seen in my close-up, beware of substitutions from later stereo copies. It was printed and made in England by Polydor Records Ltd, London.

Cover Front: A very respectable front but it has a price sticker residue mark, but NO pull near the top right corner area. Fairly small but present nonetheless. There is a ring arc rub top and bottom and some corner creasing, but hardly excessive. Still generally clean and quite attractive. This is single thickness card and it never wears well anyway, so this, in context is more than reasonable anyway, many seen are a real mess The lack of excessive rubbing and creasing is a bonus.

Cover Back: The back is nice and only has mildish rubbing near the top edge and any ring marks this side are ultra fine and faint. Little creasing and few marks with strong colour retained, really nice overall.

Cover Centrefold: The right ‘Lizard’, black side has minor ring impression and a tiny few surface creases but little else. The left side, that has the lyrics to Morrison’s famous poem ‘The Celebration of the Lizard’, is predominately white, hence the intense black or the right side has ‘set-off’a little in places, mostly near the top and bottom edge. This will be present on practically all examples of this cover as few would have thought to place a spare inner sleeve inside to avoid it – all is easy with hindsight isn’t it? A little corner creasing and odd small mark, but little else again.

Top Edges: Mildish patchy rubbing.

Bottom Edges: Light to moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Neat and quite sharp with no feathering, records enters on back edge.

Spine and Text: The spine has rubbed on the back fold but little on the front. There is a rub near the top that has virtually removed the Catalogue number, but all other text is fully present and unworn. Still solid with mild compression as only single thickness but folded squarely so both the right edges meet up closely and near parallel.

Corners: All have rubbed but no excessively, some creasing as mentioned above but generally, these remain neat and are of course fragile.

Cover Summary: The sticker residue mark aside, this is still a fine attractive cover and never easy to find devoid of wear. With that in mind, a very respectable example, not for everyone but certainly okay for the more tolerant collector of the rarer originals.

The Inner: This includes a plain white inner in very fine condition, there is NO insert.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: Near impossible to grade with a word, it has substantial pressing marks on side one as mentioned in detail above but other marks are few and light. Logic tells me to grade EX as this is only one level of as made but clearly the manufacture flaw is a factor – side two has little to fault and the record without any doubt has hardly been played. So rather than put a definitive grade on this, just read what I have explained and make up your own mind. Side one is not pretty with dulled surfaces ranging from fairly small to quite large, the surfaces are clean and the record very solidly pressed. The fact it’s been so lightly played is a bonus and minus the pressing marks, this would be an outstanding copy, never easy in mono of course. Not for the discerning collector but for those who choose not to scrutinise records looks but rather listen to the content, this will be okay.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic record plays somewhat above its visual looks with not too much to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound (so important on mono records), all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. As stated again already, a little sound is evident on the quieter passages on the first two songs on side one and thereafter things improve considerably to little else unwanted with side two playing beautifully. A little low-level ‘whoosh’ on one point of contact (not permanent rotation) is evident, but most is masked by the music, if this is an issue, do not bid, simple. The avoidance of groovewear and penetrating scratches is certainly worthy of mention and a huge positive. Doors albums of this vintage are more often than not seen trashed and mutilated with deep marks and horrible needle scratches from unforgiving record players of the era. In real terms, this is still a very fine copy and one that can still be enjoyed to a very high degree. Some listeners can shut-out minor audio imperfections better than others. I do not find it easy myself, but easily tolerated the minor sound blemishes here, better this than distortion caused by groovewear which this has avoided totally and same for irritating clicks. I enjoyed hearing this album in mono again after what had been an age, the songs do sound different. Both channels are clean and sharp and lacking that one-channel mono noise caused by poor stylus alignment and excessive pressure on the fragle groove walls. Truthfully, little spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this classic album. This copy is no oil painting for looks on side one, but is a masterpiece musically and better looking copies could hide hidden nasties that will reitterate, this is no bad copy. Remember the rarity of this too, almost impossible to locate a US mono version and UK ones are far from common. Certainly worthy of recommendation and considering, but only to the right collector, you have the facts, now you decide.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
