DRIFTERS (UK)
Pre-Shadows 1959
This record isn’t square one for the Shadows (UK) but it’s pretty close. This one’s from 1959 and finds the group as a quartet of Hank Marvin - Bruce Welch - Tony Meehan - Jet Harris, and recording under the name The Drifters. Bruce and Hank had only recently shed the name The Five Chesternuts when the Drifters were launched as a means to provide Cliff Richard with a hot rockin’ backing band. They didn’t really consider the problems they would have with a big US R&B vocal group using the same name.
This single pairs up “Feelin’ Fine” and “Don’t Be A Fool With Love.” This would be their only single under this name, soon changing to the Shadows. None of these original UK Drifters were in the group when they became The Shadows.
