Brief Info: The classic debut album by the American garage psychedelic rock band The Electric Prunes. A self-titled album, but often referred to as ‘I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night)’, the brilliant single that opens the set. Although it had moderate success in the United States, few even noticed here in the UK. Another absolute classic from the most wonderful year in music – 1967 – ‘The Summer of Love’, where many classics were lost with ‘Sgt Pepper’ and Beatlemania. This gem seldom surfaces as a first issue UK pressing, and then when it does, often wrecked by heavy usage on the most basic of mono record players. This massive weight pressing – and this is one of heaviest 1960s records I have ever held at a colossal 189 grams – plays superbly with little unwanted at all. Side two of the record does have a few very fine hairlines, purely superficial and a few manufacture blemishes, again they are all ignored and the album was a pure joy to play-grade. Not an album I have many times, and to date, this is the cleanest sound copy I have ever heard. A magnificent pop-psych album that deserved to be a huge success here, but like many new American acts of the time, it fell by the wayside. Now a 1960s cult classic and in demand, but rare. This is not one to lose lightly, it appears little used and more than surviving that perilous ‘mono’ era.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better for a cover over 50-years-old. A single format with front laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on three rear flipbacks. The back is matt and fairly smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd with ‘Patents pending’ text, also with the correct mono catalogue number. Also the back cover has the incorrect or misprint text of 'Tunerville Trolley', which should be 'Toonerville Trolley'. Includes the company inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A lovely looking front with nothing to fault with the graphic. The laminate retains fine shine and clarity with minimal dulling. This has avoided lifting, which for a dark cover is the best possible news. A few fine creases, mostly mild half moon types and one on the spine edge. Small light corner tip toning and mild rubbing, but for a cover this great age, this has fared very well and still looks attractive as-seen.

Cover Back: The unprotected back has gently aged with polite reminders of its era of manufacture. Moderately light toning mostly near the left entrance edge area and mild hints on the exposed flipback ends. Few will avoid this almost as the barest minimum, and I actually feel this adds genuine character to a cover like this. The main panel has no rubbing and minimal few traces of any creasing, no sticker or writing marks. All three flipbacks are solid, neat with barely any burring to their ends. A few hairlines to their laminated areas few will avoid. A small ‘stain’ to the bottom right corner tip as seen. The lack of ugly ring wear to the graphic is always great news.

Top Edge: Thin, but straight with barely even a trace of wear, the laminated surface clean and smooth with no chipping.

Bottom Edge: Almost the same, any blemishes tiny, very few and light.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, still quite sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, the ends nipped in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, this also very nicely centred. The odd small toning spot trace on the centre and very ends only.

Corners: A small rub bottom right and a little toning to most tips, but fine to very fine shape retained with no knocks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this elusive UK-made 1960’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Just enough to politely remind of age, but this should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: a Reprise company unlined inner made with very thin paper. Just top corner creasing stops a higher grading, this has survived superbly. These inners were somewhat under-.strength for Reprise records of this era that were always made thick and heavy. That said, few were ever pressed to the massive weight of this record. Almost amazing it had only one very small and neat edge split which I have neatly repaired to stop it widening and it hardly even registers. Fresh and clean with no ring wear, this early Reprise inner will prove difficult to find much better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(–): as stated, some fine surface marks, more evident on side two, but these do NOT sound and this massively pressed, deep-grooves mono record plays superbly with very little unwanted. Still a very fine visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and pressed to an amazing weight of 189 grams. Even in this golden era of quality records, few discs were pressed to this weight. A copy with modest plays on all the evidence with no penetrating stylus scratches. A few tiny ‘dot’ marks on ‘Luvin’’, I am pretty sure in manufacture, are simply ignored as well*. Visually a super record that has more than just survived the mono age and should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant pop-psych album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed – the odd mild sporadic tick apart – and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or pressing sounds. Few available copies will outperform this genuine first press UK mono example significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on a standard stereo system, I am certain this record has been played very modestly and has been generally well stored. Given the horrendous states many such classics of this mode and era show up in (with sound to match), this puts minor fine superficial hairline marks or blemishes into real perspective. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and this elusive non-charting (in the UK) classic can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
