LAST YEAR I LOST ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS TO CANCER, HE WAS A COOL MUSICIAN A DRUMMER BY TRADE, ORIGINALLY FROM SEATTLE, BUT RELOCATED TO L.A. IN 1985, HE AMASSED A VERY LARGE MUSIC COLLECTION, AND HAD KILLER TASTE FOR ROCK & ROLL, SADLY I AM SELLING OFF A LOT OF HIS COLLECTION ON BEHALF OF HIS WIDOW TO HELP PAY OFF DEBTS INCLUDING HOSPITAL BILLS, TAXES AND STORAGE UNIT FEES. I AM NOT TAKING ANYTHING FOR THIS SERVICE, DOING IT FOR MY FRIEND (MISS YOU DAVE!). THIS ITEM IS FROM HIS COLLECTION.

Zer-o-jimm 4.0 out of 5 starsLittle Bit of Sophomore Year February 27, 2012 Format: Audio CD I once listened to this album on a portable CD player that I'd stuffed into my pocket while swinging on a playground swingset about four years ago. There were some kids that were two or so years younger than me on the other swings, acting obnoxious. I had a lot of thoughts about lost innocence, about feeling out of step with my generation, about unrequited love. There was one line in that one slow song ("Elevator to Heaven", I think), about "a girl that you loved for so long" who's out "kissin' sexy demons". That was it, man. My friends, they were being drawn out by sexy demons and leaving me behind. Or at least that's how it seemed. See, I was that kid who distrusted both the in-crowd and the "rejects". Often times, there was no place for me. I felt like an outsider, even among my friends. And so often, it seemed, I would find myself alone, overhearing conversations like the one these 14-year-olds were having about whatever.The music on "Pop Bus" drowned those kids' voices out. I got caught up in the catchiness of the songs and swung higher and higher. Somewhere in my troubled brain, I felt as though I was above those kids at that moment. That I was surpassing them and the rest of my dumb teenager life. Goodbye, Lunenburg High School. I've got to fly now.
It's funny how, during darker times, especially those teen-aged angst periods, little obscurities like this record provide escape and end up making some of your most significant memories. I mean, really, who the hell are The Elevator Drops? I didn't know, but it was 50 cents and had a freaky album cover and liner notes about vampires and namedroppers. Cool.
The music was bliss. It's not really 'happy', I guess, but it was bliss nonetheless. Skewered, alternative pop-rock, maybe? I dunno. There's nothing quite like it, although it does have a distinct 90's vibe.

Format: Audio CD This album is one of my favorites of all time, a fully realized masterpiece. Gool-Kasian's voice is absolutely electric, Garvy J's guitar shreds your broken heart, and Fitts drums like Data with a short circuit. It's hard to pinpoint the climax of the album, there are so many wonderful moments, from the chorus of "Elevator to Heaven" to the throbbing ambiance of "the Last 4th of July," to the full throttle rock of "Shangri-La." And stay tuned through the long minutes of fuzz and drone at the end for the capstone to this perfect record.Forgotten Fridays returns this week with a band I absolutely hated back in college: The Elevator Drops. I can't really blame them for my dislike. Back in 1996, I was thrilled that The Rentals were opening for Blur at Avalon. Seeing two of my then favorite bands together was everything I wanted. The Rentals ended up getting stuck on the Red Hot Chili Peppers/Silverchair tour and had to drop off the Blur tour. They were replaced with The Elevator Drops. Any anger I felt towards the band was purely based on me being 19 and dumb. Also, I was a die hard Lemonheads fan, and I took their song "Be a Lemonhead (Beautiful Junkie)" as a personal insult to my fandom.
Somehow, The Elevator Drops popped into my head last week, and I decided to give them an actual fair shot for the first time ever. Pop Bus holds up remarkably well. It does scream 1996, but in the best way. It's the ultra-groovy alternative rock that the mid-90s Boston scene was just drenched in but nobody seems to remember. It has just a smidge of the electronica that was set to explode nationwide a year later, but it's not exactly dance music. While it's fairly happy sounding and pretty poppy, there is this bizarre undercurrent of annoying and irritating noise, kind of like Ween or an undercover version of Happy Flowers. Their closest bands sound-wise would be The Dandy Warhols or Jack Drag. I seem to remember them also having a gimmick, almost like they were meant to be aliens. Or that could be the sound of songs like "Elevator to Heaven" that put that in my head.
"Be a Lemonhead (Beautiful Junkie)" is a phenomenal song in retrospect. I wish I had stopped being a stupid teenager and been a fan back in their heyday.
