Again, excellent stuff. To my ears, The End's catalog compares favorably to the more well known, more highly thought of english psych-pop bands. I too, really like stuff by July, Blossom Toes, Tomorrow, etc, and these tracks, along with their one official album are just as strong. Perhaps time had passed them by as when their offical album 'Introspection' was released in 69, the music world had started down a more progressive path and psych pop was becoming quickly passe. Understandable, though it was no fault of the band. They were a victim of circumstances and had the misfortune (or fortune, depending on how you look at it) of being associated with the Stones and by proxy, Allen Klein. 'Introspection' should have been released in 68 but got snagged up in the dealings between Klein and the Stones and it wasn't until much later that it received an official release but the world had moved on. It's only with the benefit of years passed that 'Introspection' can be judged fairly. And fairly, it is one of the classics of the genre. With this Tenth Planet release, 'In The End' contains a bunch of demos recorded during 69-70. It too is top quality stuff, though not as psych oriented as their earlier tracks. The sense of melody, the tight arrangements, first rate playing and tho only demos, superb production make this a great listen. If the history of The End would have been different, this compilation shows them naturally growing into a more progressive direction while playing to their strengths at the same time. The diversity, among other things, spelled the finish of The End but they left behind some great stuff. FWIW, I've never heard them, but eventually The End morphed into Tucky Buzzard, leaving behind their more melodic, experimental, progressive traits to focus on straight rock. Too bad. The End should have been contenders.
