Label/Format: President – matt finish, deeply ridged and with very rustic textured surfaces (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look lovely: clean and attractive with just the odd small mark or trace of discolour. Yellow is the most critical in revealing anything, even more so than white, fact. To see these vintage President labels looking this fine is rare. Spindle marks are very few and faint and clearly this record has been played little.

Cat Number: PTL 1025.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: None.

Weight of this Record: A very substantial 164 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Brief Info: A fairly successful sixties band that unusually at the time, included both black and white musicians and their name The Equals was no coincidence. Featuring the talents of a young Eddie Grant who wrote most of the songs on this their fourth album the band played a dynamic blend of pop and rock. A highly prolific band at the end of the 60s, this being their third album within the same year as well as two EP issues. This is a superb mono record, clearly hardly played and sounding little short of perfect. Massively pressed on high quality vinyl this has avoided all the perils that trashed so many records at this time. Never an easy title to find and rare like this, a copy that should please most discerning collectors.

Cover Grade and Format: Strong EX and bar some mild tone spots on the back could have been still higher. A single format with front laminate that wraps around the closed edges on to three large rear flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse.

Lamination & Front: Another superbly preserved front cover that retains fresh, clean and vibrant, intense colour. Fully adhered with no blistering or lifting, it remains ultra clear with a great shine. No friction rubs or dulling and creasing has been avoided with barely any of note at all. The artwork of the young band is fantastic and is as lovely as when first printed. Slight toning traces to the right exposed edge strip where the laminate ends slightly short of full width. No peeling and barely any marks to the surface, this superb front will take a lot of beating. The front on its own grades little short of Mint(-)

Cover Back: With just a few small and light tone spots on what is a practically unworn back panel, this again is quite exceptional given its great age. Any handling marks or grubbiness hardly registers and there are no creases or ring marks. The flipbacks are neat with no burring but the ends have mild toning but no grime-lines. All solid and well stuck down with no damage and incredibly hardly any creases. Never easy to find backs like this with so little wear and those tone spots really are minimal and mild.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: And again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with a fairly rustic type trim in manufacture, little real wear is apparent and this is guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A fine spine too but with one small surface chip or scuff. Solid, quite straight and avoiding compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid laminate.

Corners: All very neat and any tip rubs are tiny.

Cover Summary: A very strong all round example of this scarce late 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many collectors but not quite the perfectionists.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ as the very least, this is an outstanding mono record. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with only a few very mild and faint surface marks that have no sound. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This high quality President record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high indeed with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. The back cover states ‘a high fidelity recording’ and it proves to be true. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing that has clearly avoided heavy needle abuse from those early days. We all know what these vintage mono records look like these days and few examples of this title will be found better than this. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
