Label/Format: President – matt finish, deeply ridged and with heavily textured surfaces like the very early Island pinks (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both look very nice indeed, faint handling traces on side one, barely any on side two. Spindle marks are only light and faint.

Cat Number: PTL 1006.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 140 to 150 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 20 records from these eras. Later pressings were usually lighter still).

Rarity: A scarce and elusive debut album, the rarest within their catalogue and will not prove easy to find much better than this.

Musicians: Derv Gordon - lead vocals; Lincoln Gordon - guitar; Eddy Grant - guitar; Pat Lloyd - bass guitar; John Hall - drums.

Brief Info: A fairly successful sixties band that unusually at the time, included both black and white musicians and their name The Equals was no coincidence. Featuring the talents of a very young Eddie Grant who wrote a high percentage of the songs on this their rare debut President album. The band played a dynamic blend of pop and rock and this is fantastic album. It includes their best-known popular hit single ‘Baby, Come Back’ (written by Grant) that most around at the time will remember well. A highly prolific band at the end of the 60s. This is a superb record, lightly played and sounding superb. Heavily pressed on high quality vinyl this has avoided all the perils that trashed so many records at this time. Both playing surfaces very clean and shiny with only a tiny few very light surface marks that have no sound and ever an easy title to find this lightly played. I consider this one of the unheralded greats of this period and in Equals terms, this is ‘Unequalled Equals’.

Cover Grade and Format: Critically graded EX+. Laminated on the front, this wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and with the early ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination and Front: Superly fresh and ultra clear with no lifting or blisters. Fantastic shine with hardly any traces of friction rubs or dulling and this has a real de luxe look and feel. A tiny few very light and fine surface marks only really show when viewed under angled light. Barely any creases and the right edge clean with no grime-line formation. Any record impression light and faint and just a fine press line near the centre of the top flipback. The artwork is stunning and will not prove easy to find much better than this.

Cover Back: Little real wear at all, but a few scattered, small and light tone spots. In terms of an unprotected back this great age, this is still quite clean and attractive. The flipbacks are large and undamaged with minimal traces of grubbiness, just slight toning to the edges which remain unburred. No creasing and just enough minor blemishes to remind it’s over 40 years of age.

Top Edges: Practically unworn, odd tiny chip, but look hard.

Bottom Edges: Barely any wear again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any traces of wear and guaranteed untrimmed. A slightly ‘rustic’ trim in manufacture. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Very solid, quite straight with barely any compression, end ends tapered in manufacture. All text is perfect and unworn under the very solid laminate.

Corners: All very neat with hardly any wear, even to the tips.

Cover Summary: A very strong and highly attractive all round example of this scarce 1967 cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please most collectors.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ (at the very least), this is an outstanding heavily pressed disc. A very fine visual copy that is super clean, shiny and intense black. A copy only very lightly played on all the evidence with just a tiny few light surface marks that have no sound. This type of record from this heady era will prove very difficult to find much better. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This high quality President record plays superbly and even above its high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high indeed with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even register and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing that has clearly avoided heavy needle abuse from those early days. We all know what these vintage mono records look like these days and few examples of this title will be found better than this. Few copies will match or outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp with none of the unwanted ‘mono record’ noises from either channel, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly been carefully handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
