‘Long Player’ was the Faces second album, it saw the band spreading their wings a little as they managed to rock wildly, do soulful and folky ballads, electrify the blues as good as the Stones ever did and then tear up covers by, amongst others, Paul McCartney and make them their own. This was the last record they’d release before the mainstream and the pop charts openly embraced them, although even ‘Long Player’ managed to chart around the 30 mark in both the UK and the US. In many ways this is the perfect Faces sampler, it’ll give you a tantalising taster for what this band were all about; and in tracks like ‘Bad ‘N’ Ruin’ and ‘Had Me A Real Good Time’ there’s two of this bands greatest tracks, there’s even a couple of live cuts that demonstrate how the early seventies rock circuit must have been a far better place for having these boys around!
This is a nice heavyweight piece of vinyl that looks like new, there are very few visual signs of age or use here. It has the pristine sheen of a new record, there are no bad scratches and no manufacturers defects in the vinyl. The paper scuffs, which it is virtually impossible not to find some of, unless a piece of vinyl is being unsealed for the first time, are very few and far between, even under a strong light bulb. The label is clean and unmarked, spindle wear suggests that this album has had a few plays but definitely not too many. Putting the needle down for the first time certainly feels like playing a new record, there is only the lightest rumble of surface noise, no nasty interfering hiss. And as for audio clarity, well right from the opening ‘Bad ‘N’ Ruin’ riff, there is a powerful feel to the sound coming out of these speakers, no rough edges smoothed out - it sounds exactly the way it was meant to, exactly the way it was cut. There are virtually no pops or clicks to talk about, throughout the album and between the tracks the needle keeps running through beautiful clean grooves. At worst, there are a couple of isolated pops but basically this is a pristine piece of vinyl with superb audio clarity.
COVER CONDITION: EXCELLENT
This is a legendary album cover, pressed on thick card with a minimalist sleeve design made to look like a typical old 78rpm shellac disc cover. The card is very thick and sturdy, there are no marks on it and no blemishes, there are no creases across the main area of the cover and only some very faint ones near the sides. The edges are all pretty rough textured by design but there is certainly no extra wear caused by any scuffing, apart from a tiny bit of wear on the top left corner the whole piece is still in really great shape. The front has a circular cut out design so that the record label shows through. This is an unusual album cover that is becoming increasingly scarce on the collectors market, especially in well preserved state like this one.
