Brief Info: A prolific post-punk band with ever-changing line-ups, this was their eighth album, and although I have only heard some of their many albums, this is the best I have heard to date. Arguably their greatest line-up and I regard this as one of the true classics of the 1980s. Adored by the late John Peel, who always called them the ‘Mighty Fall’, he played their music regularly on his late-night show at this time. Fronted by Mark E. Smith, his dead-pan style of vocals rarely sound better than on this slightly more accessible album. He is joined by the American guitarist Brix Smith, his then wife, they divorced in 1989. Released to highly favourable reviews, this even charted in the UK, and deservedly so. Typically full-on with edgy songs that even pay homage to Germany’s Krautrock favourites Can and their early vocalist Damo Suzuki. The percussion and rhythm mimicking early Can songs that include Bel Air from ‘Future Days’. The strange title to the final song is a reference to Anthony Burgess’ novel ‘A Clockwork Orange’. This is The ‘Mighty’ Fall at their very best and this an original UK copy that does it maximum justice. The pressing quality is superb as is the sound. For those yet to discover this fantastic indie band, there is no better place to start, this one unreservedly recommended.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with semi-shiny coated surfaces. There are no cover credits, includes the graphic inner sleeve.

Cover Front: A couple of tiny tip creases apart, there is little else to fault on this impressive front.

Cover Back: The back is pretty much the same minus the tip creases, the odd faint trace of toning hardly shows.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside has no coating protection, the matt finish has some toning in places, but barely any real wear at all.

Top & Bottom Edges: All four straight, flat and neat with hardly any trace of wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with barely any thickening, the front is closed. Record enters on the back, all are guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: A near perfect spine, solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very ­closely together and parallel. No text printed on this one, no fading to the graphic that flows around.

Corners: Tiny fine tip creases on the right front tips, little else to fault.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this mid-1980’s cover, one that gives only gentle clues of age, it could prove difficult to find much better. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: an unlined graphic paper inner with no wear, barely creased and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR MINT: and clearly hardly played. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. Any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant Fall album, arguably their very best, plays up to it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few available copies will outperform this first UK pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
