THE FIXX REACT MCA RECORDS 42008 ISSUE 1987 RELEASE

 React is the first official live album, and fifth overall, by British new wave band The Fixx, released in 1987. It was recorded during two concerts in Canada in 1986 in the band's tour in support of their album Walkabout. The album contains three new studio tracks: "Big Wall", "Rules and Schemes", and "Don't Be Scared", which was released as a single. Also included is a re-recorded studio version of "Red Skies".

THE FIXX GREATEST HITS ONE THING LEADS TO ANOTHER CD

The Fixx were one of my favorite singles bands of the ‘80’s. I read a reviewer once describe them as “the aural equivalent of a Nehru jacket.” Only people of a certain age will even get that joke, and those that do will likely, like myself, laugh and get a bit defensive simultaneously. Do The Fixx, with their glassy PPG Wave 2 synths (also used by Asia and by Yes on their comeback album 90125, if they sound familiar) and their gated-reverbed drums / drum machines, sound dated? Certainly. But no more so than the Doors with their Vox Continental combo organ and sustained guitar reverb. The difference is that The Doors were more popular and still get played more often, so we’ve never gone for more than a few weeks or months without hearing a Doors song playing somewhere; and therefore, as a result, we often forget just how dated they sound.

And it’s a fine line. If you hew too closely to conventional styles and sounds, you’ll get tagged with the dreaded “retro” tag, which assures you’ll never have any real credibility with anyone under 30. Use too much modern technology, and you risk sounding like a relic when your teenage fans actually turn 30. It’s a balancing act. That said, I think if you can get past the aural trappings of the era, what you’ll find is a surprisingly good singles act. They were primarily known for the mega-hit “One Thing (Leads to Another)” which so eclipsed their other chart entries that they’ve come to be regarded as “one-hit wonders” (another dreaded tag).

But like a few other one-hit wonders of the era (A Flock of Seagulls comes to mind), they actually had much more to offer than their one “hit.” In fact, it may not even be the best song on the album. I personally often vacillate between “Secret Separation” and “Deeper and Deeper,” but most of the songs on the album are stronger than you would expect from a one-hit wonder band. There are a few songs I might categorize as filler (most notably “A Letter to Both Sides” and “Sunshine In the Shade,” both of which were tellingly left off the vinyl version of the album). But by and large, this collection stands up, in my opinion, as one of the better “best ofs” of the era.

A few people have complained about the “new recording” of “Red Skies” (now over a quarter of a century old) and the live version of “Stand Or Fall,” but I have to heartily disagree. I lived through the era, and I listened to a lot of alternative radio and watched a lot of MTV (and Night Flight before we got pay-cable). So, I know the original versions of the songs. But I honestly think that the versions here are better. Just my opinion. I always liked “Red Skies,” but I felt it dragged a bit towards the end. This version is a bit faster and more energetic (rare for a re-recording), as if they were so used to playing it in front of a live audience that they adjusted the tempo to be more crowd-pleasing. And in my opinion, it works.

And on the topic of live versions, most people knock the live version of “Stand Or Fall.” But again, in my opinion, it has a tension and dynamics absent from the more sterile-sounding studio version. In particular, after the bridge, when Cy Curnin yells to the crowd, there is a brief pause before the instruments all come crashing back in unison. That moment always gives me chills. And the studio version just doesn’t deliver the same punch as far as I’m concerned. Of course, I’ve never been a purist. If something can be improved without diminishing its integrity, then by all means, go ahead. And to me, these two versions do just that. I tried owning the Essential compilation for a while (which does have the original versions, plus the added bonus of including the post OTLTA comp hit “Driven Out”), but it just never really gelled with me the way this album did.
