The Flaming Lips Embryonic on 2LP Set  Band Returns to Psychedelic Roots on Trippy, Contagious 2009 Studio Album   Embryonic is The Flaming Lips' 12th studio album and first double LP. According to ringleader Wayne Coyne, Embryonicwas conceived as a double album as a means of forcing the band to become more free and uninhibited. “I believe I was stuck thinking of us as being a group of reckless, sloppy freaks,” he explains “and that, if we weren’t constantly trying to be more disciplined or more refined or more together, maybe our creative luck would elude us.” As the title suggests, Embryonic has an air of being a work in progress rather than a completed action and it makes for some very exciting and liberating music from one of music's most enigmatic performers.  "It sounds like John Lennon but if he got together with Miles Davis and they went back in time, but there was a supercomputer that they could figure out how to work." - Wayne Coyne/NME on Embryonic "Favoring space-jazz rhythms that split the difference between electric Miles Davis and Krautrockers Can, with wild bursts of distorted guitar that evoke gonzo Frank Zappa crossed with punked-out mid-period Pink Floyd, the 18 tracks comprise what would have been a great headphone-friendly double album back in the day.
