THE FLOWER POWER Mississippi Delta / Bye Bye Baby 7” Vinyl 1968 TUNE-KEL  240-265

Original and Rare 7” /45 Vinyl Issue on Tune-Kel. Second of five singles from this prolific Gulport, Mississippi band on the New Orleans-based Tune-Kel label.  “Bye Bye Baby” swings like a lost Mamas and Papas AM Top 40 hit, but the real star here is the Hammond-fueled fuzzy-guitar groover “Mississippi Delta,” which storms along on a nice “I’m A Man” rhythm with a big ol’ throbbing dancefloor-friendly bassline.  The male/female harmonies on the chorus are oddly sinister, and for a moment I thought they were chanting some unknown Satanic verse before I realized rather stupidly they were simply spelling their home state. Fuzz guitar is held in check for much of the song, but when it’s unholstered really takes off. A prime slice of Southern-fried psychedelic soul, and a free spelling lesson wrapped up in Satanic verse.  Uncomped too!
