Description

The Flying Machine - SMILE A LITTLE SMILE FOR ME b/w MAYBE WE'VE BEEN LOVING TOO LONG is a 1969 Promo 45rpm release on the Congress label # C-6000.  
"Smile A Little Smile For Me" was written by the UK hitmakers Tony Macaulay (the Foundations, Edison Lighthouse, Marmalade, literally dozens of others) and Geoff Stephens (New Vaudeville Band, Tom Jones, Lulu, etc.), who wrote and recorded the song with Macaulay singing lead and Stephens providing harmonies. Giving the one-off song a random band name and releasing it through Macaulay's licensing deal with Pye Records, the duo didn't bother to actually assemble a band until the song was already a hit. Given its dreamy melody and low-key arrangement, based on chiming acoustic guitars and a muted trumpet and featuring a deliciously mournful chorus, it seems obvious in retrospect that the song would be a smash, but Macaulay and Stephens didn't put much effort towards crafting a follow-up. The band they formed to tour behind the song, basically the third-tier freakbeat band Pinkerton's Assorted Colours with a slightly rejiggered lineup, recorded and released a few singles and a 1970 album under the Flying Machine name, then broke up.
The label shows very light wear on both sides. The record is in VG++ condition.
