THE FOX "The Man, The Man" b/w "The Astrology Song"

Original 1966 (?) 45 on the US RINGS OF SATURN label

Vinyl plays VG++ to EXCELLENT

SUPER RARE unknown and crude garage punker from some seriously deranged hippie kids heavily into astrology and mysticism, that’s for sure.  Which is fine, I guess – I mean, if you wanna make your B-side about the zodiac, that’s cool.  And name your label after a planet too.  Go ahead.  But when your executive producer is listed as “High Priest Smoking Bear,” well, that just might be taking it a little too far, Moonchild.  Still, I don’t think any of these guys were Mensa candidates, if you go by the lyrics anyway.  Sure, they’ve got the whole late 60’s acid rock sound down pat.  Much of the backing track for “The Man, The Man” sounds like the extended middle break in Steppenwolf’s “Magic Carpet Ride” reinvented as a weed-burnin’ nitro-fueled psycho-hillbilly hoedown, and that’s cool too.  But Jeez Louise, those lyrics, man!  I guarantee you these guys ain’t speaking English as a first language, I’ll stake my (Johnny) paycheck on it!  Put it this way – if you laughed all the way through the Shaggs’ “My Pal Foot Foot,” then try to keep a straight face for the zodialogical lesson known as the Fox’s “Astrology Song”…

“Aries says I am and Taurus says I have, and Gemini says I can.  Cancer says I feel and the Leo says I will and the Virgo says I analyze.  If you don’t know what I’m talking about, why don’t you listen closely while I tell you more.  There are facts in horoscopes, ‘cause it’s for real and it’s a dope.”

No, seriously, I didn’t make that up.  Those are really the lyrics.  But wait, there’s more.  And it’s a dope.

“Because the Libra says I balance, and the Scorpio says I desire.  Sagittair says I aim, and Capricorn says I climb… (organ solo, while everyone tries to figure out why the singer said ‘Sagittair’)  Sooner or later everyone is gonna want and find out just what’s in the stars and what do they show?  When we’ll all be hip to the horoscope, and no one’s gonna feel like a dope.”

Right about that one.  I feel smarter just listening to this song.  Sure wish there was another word that rhymed with “horoscope” though…

“Aquarius says I know and the Pisces says I believe, and I’m a Pisces and I believe, so if I won’t leave because I believe, where shall I weave?  (something something) ‘cause I’m a Pisces and I believe.”

Well now, what can you possibly add to that?  Makes the Shaggs look like poet laureates if’n ya ask me, all set to a genius-level garage psych organ riff that manages to out-simplify even the Seeds.  And not only that, you learn something too!  Take that, Bill Cosby!  Remember, ain’t no one gonna feel like a dope when you’re hip to the horoscope.  Except maybe the bandmember who has to introduce his friends to the creepy guy known as “High Priest Smoking Bear.”

HEAR IT!

UPDATE: SORRY, I NO LONGER SHIP TO ITALY DUE TO A CORRUPT POSTAL SYSTEM (THERE, NOT HERE).

(THE LESS EXCITING STUFF...)

First class shipping is $4.00 in the US, with each additional record only $1 additional shipping.  Delivery confirmation included in the shipping costs.  US International postal rates just shot up nearly double this past week, so please take note of the new rates.  I don't make a profit on shipping costs - these are what the post office charges me.  Air mail shipping to Canada starts at $10 US, each additional record $3 shipping.  Air mail shipping everywhere else in the world starts at $13 US, with each additional record only $4 shipping.

I try to grade as best as I can, and I list as many blemishes/imperfections I can find (writing, ringwear, scuff marks, etc.) – Also, please note that I DO listen to these albums – I may not listen to every track, but my grades are based on LISTENING, not just looking at it, since chances are you’ll be listening to the record you buy, not just looking at it.  Most of the albums I sell are the ones I’ve enjoyed for years – and I treat my records with kid gloves.  But sounds speak louder than words, so check out the sound clips below – they’re from the actual record you’re bidding on.

SHIPPING AND PACKAGING

Listen, I buy a bunch of records too (when I’m not getting outbid at the last second, which is more often than not) – and I know what it’s like to get a rare, one-of-a-kind album packaged dangerously in a flimsy bubblewrap package.  I hate that too.  So rest assured, I ALWAYS package albums with stiff cardboard reinforcements, same for 45s.  And yes, the records are removed from the sleeves (for albums).  I ship out once a week, every Friday, because I have a regular day job.  But I’d be willing to give that up if you’d all be so kind as to bid my items up to stupidly high amounts.

NOW IT’S YOUR TURN…

I will always leave positive feedback for successful transactions, and would appreciate the same in return.  All I ask of you is the following – please pay for your items within 14 days of the close of auction.  Compared to other sellers, that’s a generous amount of time, so if you don’t pay within 2 weeks, then I have to assume something’s wrong.  You’ll get an Ebay payment reminder at that point, and possibly a decapitated horse head in your bed.  If, after 30 days, you still haven’t forked up the cash, I’ll relist the item and yell at you if I ever see you in town.
