Description
"Before Hollywood" was the second album released by Australian indie rock band The Go-Betweens. It was recorded in the UK in 1982 and released in 1983 on the English independent label; Rough Trade. The first Australian release was on the Stunn label in 1983, but Stunn Records closed down, and "Before Hollywood" was re released in Australia on the Rough Trade label in 1984.(There was a third reissue in Australia in 1990 on the Red Eye label) The record listed here is that 1984 release. I bought this record new in the mid 1980's and taped it straight away, it has only been played a dozen or so times over the years usually to make a new tape, most recently just before listing. The album is included in the book "100 Best Australian Albums" listed at number 87. The vinyl on side one is clean and shiny and both labels are clean, THE VINYL ON SIDE TWO IS ALSO CLEAN, HOWEVER THERE IS "MISTING", WHICH IS A DISCOLOURATION OF THE VINYL DUE TO A REACTION WITH THE PLASTIC INNER SLEEVE.(SEE PHOTO 5). THIS DISCOLOURATION CANNOT BE CLEANED OFF. AT THE TIME WHEN I BOUGHT THIS RECORD I USED TO TAPE RECORDS AS SOON AS COULD, AND THEN CLEAN THEM BEFORE PUTTING THEM BACK INTO THEIR COVERS. IN THIS INSTANCE SIDE TWO WAS NOT PROPERLY DRY AND AS A CONSEQUENCE THE AREAS WHERE THE INNER SLEEVE TOUCHED THE VINYL REACTED TO PRODUCE THIS "MISTING" EFFECT. SOME MONTHS AFTER PUTTING THE RECORD AWAY WHEN MAKING ANOTHER TAPE I NOTICED THIS AND PLACED IT IN A NEW INNER SLEEVE MADE OF A DIFFERENT PLASTIC. THIS STOPPED THE MISTING PROCESS. Both sides play LOUD and clear, with some low level surface on the run in tracks and between the tracks, masked when the music is playing. I have graded the vinyl as VG+ for side one and VG- for side two due to the appearance of the misting. I have played both sides twice before listing and listened on speakers and headphones and cannot detect any deterioration in sound quality on side two,which plays as VG+. The cover has a low sheen finish front and back. Both sides are clean, no writing or stickers, no splits or tears. There is a light crease across the bottom left hand corner, and the shape of the record can be seen when held at an angle to the light but there is no ring wear. The spine is still intact and can easily be read in the shelf(VG+). For track listings see photos 6 & 7.
