Alas, history doesn't accept phrase "what could've been" and I really wish to see how this one particular band would've developed, if it wasn't for death of their bassist Jimmy Fernandez.
Musically and vocally, there are a lot of comparisons thrown in - Neurosis, Swans, Jane's Addiction (not musically), Soundgarden, but God Machine had a sound of their own, while taking bits and pieces of ideas from other musicians.
Lyrically, they deal with anger, isolation, role of religion in one's life and many other topics well-known to teens and younger adults. However, its a tad more deep, than, say, Kurt Cobain lyrics.
They were also really large on atmospherical pieces - some of the most striking examples are "Purity" and "Seven"
(from their debut "Scenes From The Second Storey" (1992),which are really frightening in their depiction of internal emptiness and desperation.

Da San Diego, un atipico trio che con soli 2 LP si è guadagnato di prepotenza un posto di riguardo nel novero delle mie preferenze musicali di ogni tempo. Questo è il loro esordio, una bellezza plumbea rinnovabile ad ogni ascolto, come una fonte d'energia pulita. Energia appunto, quella tracimante da ogni traccia di questo album doppio (un'ora e mezza di magia) e soprattutto una tensione emotiva che si mantiene costante dall'inizio alla fine, dalla fulminante apertura di "Dream Machine" all' acidissima "The piano song". Nel mezzo l'ascensione, dove le direzioni e gli spostamenti non hanno più senso, "Seven", un incantesimo corto 16 minuti, un patrimonio sonoro da tramandare di generazione in generazione, a mo' di tradizione orale.

Album fuori catalogo da molti anni, “Scenes from the second storey” è il debutto degli inglesi God machine. Ho avuto la fortuna di trovarlo dopo vari tentativi su Napster e ho potuto riascoltarlo dopo tanto tempo.
E’ un esordio duro, ostico al primo ascolto, quello dei God machine, autori di un hard rock intenso e carico di disperazione e rabbia.
La loro musica esprime un grande disagio e una profonda frustrazione che trovano sfogo in canzoni emozionanti e struggenti (“The desert song” e “It’s all over”); altrove sono la rabbia e il dolore a prendere il sopravvento, come accade in “She said”, “The blind man”, “Ego”, “Temptation”, caratterizzate da musiche martellanti e ipnotiche.
Il suono diventa epico in alcuni casi, oscillante tra il rumore e la melodia più straziante. "Seven”, la penultima traccia, ha la funzione che aveva “The end” nel primo album dei Doors. Lunga 16 minuti, il brano riassume in pieno la musica dei God machine, con lo stesso accordo di chitarra fino alla fine, la voce lamentosa, ma mai pesante, il ritmo ossessivo della batteria, il finale sognante e desolato.
“Purity”, il brano conclusivo, parte acustica quasi a voler purificarci da tanto rumore, ma quando ormai sembra finita, riesplode la batteria in un crescendo sonoro che conclude l’album.
I God machine hanno saputo suonare emozioni e sentimenti in maniera sublime. Hanno cantato l’angoscia e sono riusciti a trasmetterla come pochi.
Fanno male, ma è impossibile non ascoltarli.

There is a deep stillness and beauty at the heart of this thunderstorm of distorted and guitar and tribal crashing drums. God Machine seemed to speak of the divine at work in the seeming madness of the world. Stranger and deeper than any of the other rock of the time, and has matured with age.
