The Godz were a New York City-based garage rock band that existed from 1966 to 1973. Their music varied from early noise rock to avant-garde and psychedelic rock. In 1967 the Godz released this, their second recording, a bolder, more adventurous soundscape which is, in some people's opinion, the group's masterpiece.
This has got to be one of the weirdest recordings from the 60's psych era. Minimalist, weak musical ability, like a bunch of drunk (but not too loud) frat boys let loose in the studio and told to sing, play, or even do anything they want. Songs break down in the middle, re-start, the group talks about what they're doing, you hear it all and wonder what's going on. Yet, doesn't that sound a lot like "Let It Be"?
I'm not putting the Godz in the same class as the Beatles by any means (in spite of their "cover" of "You Won't See Me"), but there is a certain...shall we say deviousness to their amateurism? Like, maybe it isn't as bad as it first seems? Then a song like "Radar Eyes" starts to draw you in, and you find yourself listening a little more closely....then bam you are hooked...
That being said this is a psychedelic masterpiece. It definitely falls into that era and isn't too far from groups like the Stooges. Maybe this is the missing link?
