Label/Format: Liberty – first blue format with matt, smooth surfaces. Second pressings were black, this album much rarer on the blue format that were by now coming to an end, thus not available for very long with only limited numbers pressed.

Label Conditions: Both in superb conditions with only quite light, fine and faint spindle marks. Fresh, clean and attractive examples and the record with sound to match.

Rarity: For the reasons given further up, this blue label original is scarce and considerably harder to find than the more standard black label version.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The third and my personal favourite by this hard-rock trio, less bluesy than the previous two albums, this is The Groundhogs at their very best, a conceptual type album with a distinctive progressive edge. The subject matter is more than obvious from the title and cover, it features their best known line-up of Tony McPhee on vocals and guitar; Pete Cruickshank on bass and Ken Pustelnik on drums. Brilliantly powerful rock with McPhee again blazing away on guitar. Also great packaging with a classy heavily textured gatefold E. J. Day sleeve which unfortunately is very prone to all forms of wear. This one has been well looked after with little ageing or wear, and the record very modestly played and offering top quality sound. A blues trio enjoying a renaissance of interest from collectors and justifiably so – this is a real classic.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and given the format, arguably undergraded. An unlaminated gatefold format with the front and back quite heavily textured. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by the E. J. Day Group on soft card.

Cover Front: A really difficult cover prone to all forms of wear, I have rarely seen a better one. This front is very clean, fresh and attractive with hardly any grubbiness or wear. A tiny few super-fine edge hairlines and a small dull mark near the right centre which is almost certainly a light adhensive smear from manufacture, that hardly unusual and only seen under angled light. The lack of rubbing and sticker marks both major pluses, this really looks fantastic.

Cover Back: The back quite similar with just a fine and faint rim rub near the top edge, that seldom avoided and in most cases significantly heavier. The back always more prone to wear than the front as the record rests upon it, but this has little wear and is a great match for the lovely front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: The inside is hugely impressive and again, has hardly any wear. There is nothing of any note really worthy of mention other than it’s attractiveness.

Top Edges: Both straight and barely worn.

Bottom Edges: Same again, these ones rarely escape often significant wear.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Both very clean, sharp with barely any hint of wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record entered on the back edge, the front being closed. Exceptional given the type of card, these are not thickened or burred at all, even viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: A lovely spine too: so many are seen eroded and threadbare. Solid and thick, straight with minimal compression. Folded squarely with the edges meeting quite closely together and parallel. To see this with all the text intact and present is unusual but the proof is seen on my close-up picture. A little natural surface crinkle being highly critical, this simply from being opened, few will better this I feel sure.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small and light, very fine to excellent shape retained with just the odd fine and light tip crease or two.

Cover Summary: This is a lovely cover, always impressive if found clean with little wear – but far from easy. This very fresh example should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: the blue first issue pressings of this album were made by Polydor, as seen on the matrix details further up. So this includes that usual manufacturers style polylined inner. This being date-coded 1/0570 (May 1970), and would have been one of the first and last made prior to the black label format change (this detail seen in close-up). It has two neat and crisp window circles (a small neat repair on the back by myself), with very clear lining. Any discolouration or ageing light and all edges unsplit with repairs needed here. Overall, a very neat and attractive Polydor inner.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(++): a couple of quite fine surface marks on side one that have NO sound whatsoever, side two has little at all. This retains very fine shine, freshness and solidly pressed, this I feel sure has been played only very modestly, this reitterated by superb sound. It again should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rock classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, powerful sound and with no distortions or pressing flaws. All frequencies are sharp and clear and tracking is effortless with no problems whatsoever. Sound quality is high with a full dynamic range and very detailed sound, McPhee’s guitar is hugely impressive and the backing is top class with real drive and clout. Barely any traces of surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted, few copies will play better than this. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record which merits strong recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
