Label Conditions: Both look practically new: ultra clean and attractive with only a couple of very light and faint spindle traces and no wear around the hole area. Another one from the collection of barely played records.

Cat Number: SBLL 132.

Mode / Speed: Stereo / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 135 grams. [These days, many modern Audiophile reissues are pressed on super-heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Only a small percentage of ‘vintage vinyl’ was ever pressed this heavy. Records pressed in the 1960s averaged around 135 to 145 grams. Records pressed in the 1970s were usually lighter and averaged more around 115 – 125 grams. Some records pressed around 1973 were very thin and light due an oil crisis and shortage around this time. Some records were even issued on recycled vinyl from this period and sounded poor with crackle and surface noise evident from the very first play. If any record I buy is deemed ‘recycled’, I will never offer it, I have a very simple test to detect these records if I suspect this to be the case other than audible imperfection. Some records from this period were even pressed on other materials the most notable was ‘Dynaflex’, used by RCA around this time. Although inferior to vinyl, this at least mostly sounded reasonably acceptable but pressings on this material were wafer thin and flimsy. Beyond the 70s, many records often became thinner and lighter still but most played fine but were never quite the quality as from the ‘Golden Era’]. (This was based on ‘average’ weights for 50 records from these eras.

Rarity: Rare: when was the last time one of these showed up? UK versions sold a mere handful of copies only. I don’t know how many of these were ever pressed but what is for sure, this is an ultimate first, pressed within the first 300 made as the 1 G mothers/stampers confirm below.

Brief Info: Third and final album by an interesting US band that blended rock, blues with jazzy and psych elements, certainly not an easy one to pigeon-hole. Little known outside America, but one member was to become more of a household name with Zappa fans. Ruth Underwood, now married to Ian Underwood of The Mothers, joined Frank’s band and became a full-time member on many of the classic Discreet era albums. She had previously guested with the original Mothers of Invention on the classic ‘Uncle Meat’ album on vibes under her maiden-name Ruth Komanoff and also on ‘200 Motels’. Although she is only credited with drums on this album, she was a multi-talented percussionist and was of the very best members of any Zappa band (see close-up picture of the young Ruth). This is a rare one, so-much-so, it appears the price guides have even missed it. This is a genuine UK copy, the US version, still on Bell has a different catalogue number. Their very first US-only album was a private pressing. The record here looks barely played but does have a couple of small marks on the instrumental track ‘Theme from No Money’ with just a few light clicks apparent, little else to fault on the album thereafter (or before) and this is a superb vintage rarity. The cover is only average, and from this wonderful collection it had the most wear of all. It still looks quite nice but has a couple of significant toned spine grazes and some creases and flipback burring. Nothing major I suppose but I prefer to offer covers of the highest possible quality and rarely will I dip to a VG level. But this one is so obscure, where I am likely to find another? So certainly an unusual piece and certainly one that should appeal to Zappa fans and completists.

Cover Grade and Format: VG a single format with front lamination. This wraps around the closed edges on to three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd.

Lamination & Front: With most of the covers (and all the records) from this collection in superb condition, it was a small surprise this one has seen better days. That said, this is still a very respectable 40-year-old cover and one I had never even seen before. The laminate is still retains a very fine shine and is all fully adhered with no lifting or blisters. The only real issue is creasing, a couple of moderate ones near the top and several finer ones on the spine edge, these are more cracks than hairlines in this case. A little edge burring and the scuffs on the spine just encroach into view. The main face looks nice and has little to fault. There are very few marks to the laminate which remains very clear with barely any friction rubs or dulling. The front alone grades higher than my overall grading of Very Good.

Cover Back: Again, very respectable and maybe I am a little too fussy. The main back panel is unlaminated but only shows very mild traces of grubbiness or marks with barely a noteworthy crease to be seen. The flipbacks are little untidy with some mild burring to the edge of the bottom one. A few fine cracks to the spine and again some mild scuffing shows. A few light tone spots but minimal traces of any ringwear or impression.

Top Edge: Two or three ultra light surface creases but little real wear. The left corner has moderate rubbing however.

Bottom Edge: Some mildish surface scuffing but still very tidy.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Solid, sharpish with slight wear and mild feathering traces, but guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced. Slightly thickened when viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Not the best spine being honest, but again respectable. This has a couple of significant scuffs and some toning has occurred. The scuffs have practically avoided the text and most-all is present and unworn. The ‘A’ in ‘Ain’t’ has clipped. Still solid and most laminate intact, only eroded on the scuffs.

Corners: Light to moderate rubbing with scuffs, mild erosion to top of spine.

Cover Summary: A rare cover in a decently attractive Very Good condition. No major damage, and any real wear really confined to the spine area but even this is respectable. Still a nice-looker, it will please many collectors but clearly not one for the more discerning collector.

The Inner: The original plain unlined inner is included in EX+ condition. Although the cover has taken a few knocks, the record and its inner look barely handled or used. This still has the original shop price sticker attached and its code. The asking price for this was £1-19-11 which is an old penny below £2.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EX+ / Mint(-), As mentioned above, side one track three has a couple of marks (small clusters), almost certain pressing marks. Minimal sound, a few mild brief clicks but the only issue on what is a superb, barely played 40-year-old record. A super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Visually a lovely, rare record that should please many, if not most collectors. If the light marks are an issue, do not bid.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippetts or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This somewhat obscure record plays up to its high visual grading with nothing else to fault bar the aforementioned blemishes on track three. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no other pops or clicks were noted and this is a very fine, mostly clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this ultimate, genuine first pressing significantly I feel sure. Little, if anything really spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this somewhat ‘lost’ gem. This record will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
