Description
"What a Girl Can't Do" is a garage rock single by The Hangmen, a band from Rockville, Maryland, released in December 1965 on Monument Records (catalog no. 45-910). Written by Tom Guernsey, the song was actually recorded by The Reekers, a prior band featuring Guernsey and Bob Berberich, but released under The Hangmen’s name after The Reekers disbanded. It became a regional hit in Washington, D.C., topping the WEAM-AM 1390 charts in early 1966, even surpassing The Beatles' "We Can Work It Out/Day Tripper." The track features a raw, punk-flavored sound with guitar, harmonica, and vocal harmonies, clocking in at 2:29. Lyrically, it’s a scorned lover’s rebuke, with lines like, “Well, listen here, girl, I wanna talk to you, now / My friends say you been seein’ somebody new.” The B-side, "The Girl Who Faded Away," is a softer, mid-tempo ballad. The Hangmen later re-recorded the song for their 1966 album Bittersweet, but the original single version is considered punchier.
