THE HEADLINERS – VOODOO PLAN / WE CALL IT FUN (V.I.P. 25026) (PROMO) (EX-)
From Detroit, MI, The Headliners were fronted by guitarist Bobby Lewis. He started the band in the early 60’s in Florida as The Tornadoes. A few years later, they developed more of a Rock & Roll sound and they called themselves The Flying Tornadoes. This was a truly wild act, which actually included a trapeze as part of the stage show. One night, the trapeze broke and sent Lewis flying, knocking him out cold! By ‘64 The Flying Tornadoes had relocated to Detroit and were playing live gigs. Motown mogul Berry Gordy heard them in a club and had them signed to his V.I.P. label within a week. Although more than a few bands have staked claim to being the first all-white band to sign with Motown, it appears that these guys really were, in October ’64 on their first single. This, their second release came in 1965 and We Call It Fun, was written for the band and produced by Robert Staunton & Robert Walker. They finished recording the song and didn’t have a flip-side. Rather than take one of the covers from their live act, engineer Lawrence Horn opted to write something on the spot in the studio and he and the band stayed up into the wee hours of the morning finishing the recording. The band thought it was a ridiculous idea and considered it a joke. The net result however was a not so shabby frat-garage rave-up, recorded live in the studio and they named it Voodoo Plan. We Call It Fun is far less adventurous and is pretty much just a straight pop tune. It should be noted that this is not the same Bobby Lewis that had the monster hit Tossin’ & Turnin’ in the early 60’s. He was the star of the show, playing guitar and taking on the lead vocal duties. Lewis stayed in Detroit for his whole career and continued playing through the new millennium. This copy is in excellent condition, graded EX-. Check out the scans and audio samples.

Hi folks, this is Velvetfogg, founder of the U-SPACES music collective which ran from 1997 to 2020 on Yahoogroups and has now switched over to Facebook. The primary focus of U-SPACES was to provide a network of Psych & Garage music aficionados to build and share compilations of non comped songs. Over the past 40 years I have amassed a large 45 & LP collection which I am now choosing to put up for auction to help fund my kid’s college educations. Generally speaking, I am only putting things up for auction that are either in excellent condition or extremely rare.
My preference is to run these auctions on EBAY because of familiarity with the process, but there is the potential that I will switch or use other platforms in parallel in the future. Check out my collection on DISCOGS under VELVETFOGG. I have only listed 45’s on that site that I plan to auction in 2021/22 and the list will grow substantially on a weekly basis as I continue to go through my collection. I hope to list 10 records per week for EBAY auctions on Sundays.
