Description

A 33 1/3 RPM 4 x stereo vinyl LP boxed set , 'The Hobbit' read by Nicol Williamson

The collection was released in 1974 on the UK Argo Records label. 

This recording is a version of 'The Hobbit' by J.R.R Tolkien edited to fit on 8 sides of 4 stereo vinyl LPs to create a dramatic reading of the tale.

The story is read by the acclaimed British actor, Nicol Williamson

The 'hinged lid' box has a colour illustration, by Tolkien himself, on the lid. Included is an 8-page booklet. This has a b&w photo of Tolkien on the cover. The booklet's 4 sections provide:- 

a) A synopsis of the story 

b) An overview of the recording process, written by Harley Usill

c) An essay on "Tolkien and 'The Hobbit'", by Lissa Dimitriou

d) A summary of Nicol Williamson's acting career highlights, up  to this recording, and a b&w photo of the actor.

A Demetriou production, adapted and directed by Harley Usill with recording engineers Kevin Daly and Iain Churches.

The photo of J.R.R.Tolkien is provided by Allen & Unwin, his publishers and that of Nicol Williamson by Jim Connor.

The 4 records come in individual, poly-lined sleeves, 3 'Decca' inner sleeves with record and equipment care instructions on one side and one plain one.

Condition

The vinyl  looks VG+. 

Some slight marks and scratches, a few pops and clicks in the quiet parts. 

Overall it plays well and the above don't detract from the listening experience. 

The box is VG. It's intact and sound, but there is some wear on the corners and some marks and stains (see photos). 

Booklet and inner sleeves are clean and undamaged, with just some light creasing on both the sleeves and booklet.
