1967's EVOLUTION is the link between the Hollies' mid-'60s Beatlesque pop/"Bus Stop" sound and the full blown psychedelic glory of BUTTERFLY. The quaint, harpsichord-based "Ye Olde Toffee Shoppe" is about as baroque as baroque-pop gets, complete with sprightly flute counterpoint. "Then The Heartaches Begin" and "Heading For A Fall" stretch out into Move territory with their driving psychedelic rock feel, while "You Need Love"'s chiming guitars and harmonies recall the folk-rock of the Byrds. The vocal harmonies provide the unifying element here. As on the group's early albums, the collective approach to creativity is perfectly manifested by the consistent substitution of harmonies for solo lead vocals.
