Label/Format: Parlophone – matt smooth format with the text details as seen on my pictures. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes which are both pristine.

Label Conditions: Both in stunning conditions for their age and mode: very clean, fresh and hnighly attractive with barely any spindle traces at all on side one, and just one, yes ONE on side two. A remarkably preserved and barely played vintage mono classic that sounds as good as it looks. Such copies are incredibly hard to find, this issued when most listening was done in mono on the most basic and often very crude record players that in just a tiny few plays, wore into and degraded the information in the grooves. Well this one hardly left the record cover on all the available evidence.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. Above average, this is a real heavyweight.

Rarity: Scarce: and in this condition, rare, finding these popular mid-60s mono albums this clean is immensely difficult, and deserve to be cherished when they do so.

Brief Info: The second Hollies album which again combined classic RnB and pop, their distinctive harmony vocals at the forefront of their sound. This a beautiful vintage copy offers all that wonderful sound practically as the day it was made. No blunt or worn mono stylus have been unleashed on this beauty. Even on my clinical stereo LP12, this sounds stunning with practically nothing unwanted. Combine that with a gorgeous cover as well and you have a rare example of a true pop classic. Even the connoisseur collector can apply.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): and even that being critical of a cover of considerable age. A single format with front laminate, the covers all the closed edges and ends on three large external flipbacks. The main back panel unprotected and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text. Also included is the fragile tracing paper style lined inner sleeve also in very impressive condition.

Lamination & Front: Age-defying and gorgeous: the laminate is very shiny, fresh and very clear with no lifting and barely any dulling at all, even viewed under angled light. Also hardly any creases which is quite remarkable for a cover this age. The graphic simply exudes class when seen under laminate so unblemished. Just tiny traces of rubbing on the right exposed unlaminated strip the only minor thing of any note, this front is of connoisseur standard.

Cover Back: This unprotected side comes close to matching the splendour of the front. The odd tiny faint mark or tone spot trace and little else on the main card panel. The flipbacks all solid and undamaged, just very gentle darkening of the very ends with the odd burr trace which few of this vintage will ever escape entirely. The lack of ugly black grime lines always makes for a more attractive back as can be seen on my picture. Like the front, this will also prove hard to find better.

Top Edge: Smooth, quite straight, white and unrubbed.

Bottom Edge: Even better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring only light as seen viewed end-on, the manufacture trim has a fairly rustic finish. Record enters on the back edge, both guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: A top-class spine as well: solid, straight with barely any compression, the ends gently tapered in manufacture. All text is nigh-on perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate. Just a microscopic chip to the ‘e’ in ‘Style’.

Corners: A small tip rub to the bottom right, little else. Others retain excellent or better shape.

Cover Summary: A hugely impressive all-round example of this famous mid-1960’s cover, one that will prove massively difficult to find better. This beautiful item should please most-all collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): a delicate tracing paper style lined inner with only gentle darkening to politely remind of age – personally, I have no issue with that, and actually quite like it. Both window circles are crisp and very neat and are just one tiny nick away from perfect. The lining untorn and practically as made. One corner crease, any others very light indeed. All edges unsplit with no repairs, the old adage of a very clean and barely worn inner means a little used clean record inside, rarely applied more.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): and put into context, arguably better. A superb visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright angled light. With most of these that surface little short of trashed, this is a popular nid-1960s record on the other side of vinyl spectrum. Hardly used and visually a super disc that should please most collectors again.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality popular/RnB album plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will match, let outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. All those complex and wonderful vocal harmonies fully focused, crackle-free and precise, this standard so difficult to maintain or even expect from a record fast-approaching fifty. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove immensely difficult to find better and merits my highest possible recommendation.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
