Label/Format: Parlophone – Original yellow and black format. Side two has the embossed ‘K T’ tax codes and both these fragile characters are pristine. (Please see my label scan).

Label Conditions: Both are very impressive: very clean, fresh and attractive with only light/very light and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. This record in incredible condition for one that dates so far back and in mono of course.

Cat Number: PMC 1220.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. A very impressive heavyweight record.

Rarity: Scarce: in this condition quite rare. Hollies records with their high intensity harmony vocals are hugely prone to groovewear and massively intolerant of heavy-tracking mono stylus. Well, to state this one plays with stunning clean sound would be something of an understatement. I have seldom heard any Hollies album that will play perfectly, but this one does pretty much that. Such copies are extremely hard to track down, this being the debut from 1964, you can imagine the amount of plays this could have had and played on goodness knows what. Well fear not, this has been played little and with the utmost care, without doubt this has been very carefully looked after. A much better example of this vintage gem will never be found easily.

Brief Info: Amazing to think this debut album by this Manchester-based band dates back to January 1964. With beat-pop now very much in vogue with the success of The Beatles, the UK public could not get enough of this style of music and The Hollies quickly proved popular. Their sound was based around the quality harmony vocals of Clarke, Hicks, and Nash and a string of hit singles flowed throughout the 1960s. As stated above, their albums are very hard to find that will play well due to the dynamic and loudly recorded content within the grooves. So very prone to distortion, clipping and crackle simply by even normal use on the equipment of the day. The vast majority unable to offer quality sound on a revealing stereo system, but this one truly excelled. In fact I was almost amazed how beautifully this copy played. This not due to any blemishes of any note visually on the record that has clearly been played very lightly. But groovewear and it’s resulting unwanted sounds are the invisible enemy of the older mono record. Remember, just ONE play with a worn or chipped stylue, and the sound is wrecked. One arm drop or jolt and there is a huge deep scratch that will sound or even jump or stick. The Danssettes and similar record players of the 1960s tracked at enormous weights and the wear they inflicted on a record was immense and quick. We have all seen and heard such records, have no fears on this one. This offers near pristine sound that even the more discerning 60s collector will treasure. Although the cover has a corner crease, it still is in very attractive condition and given it’s considerable vintage, can be considered impressive too. Even the heavyweight polylined inner is near immaculate.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and very arguably undergraded as such. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: Very clean and attractive with the laminate very fresh, clear and shiny. Adhesion is practically total with no lifting of any real note. There is a moderate crease near the left corner area but few others other than fine edge types that show little. Barely any traces of friction rubs or dulling at all, even viewed under light. The very early Hollies band graphic looks fantastic with rich vibrant colour. This will prove hard to find much better – the crease being the only real factor.

Cover Back: The back has aged little either, any darkening, marks or grubbiness traces are few and very faint indeed. No ringwear, rubbing and any creases tiny, ultra few and faint. The flipbacks are all solid and neat, the ends clean with any burr traces tiny and very few. An impressive back to complement the splendid front.

Top Edge: No wear.

Bottom Edge: No wear, both quite straight and ultra smooth to the fingertip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with no wear and guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Again impresive, a couple of small surface marks, but little else. Solid, straight, uncompressed, all text is pristine perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled, super-clear laminate.

Corners: Minimal traces of wear and all retain fine shape to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile 70’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better, just the front crease to consider really. This beautiful item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: MINT(-): and giving few clues to it’s considerable age. Minor darkening to the white surface but little else to fault. Both window circles are pristine and the lining solid and clear. This is a typical heavyweight inner and has no edge splits or repairs and barely a crease to be seen.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and very heavily pressed on top quality thick vinyl. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface marks few, light and faint. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This exceptional record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault – rarely will the early Hollies albums, especially in mono do so. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will even match, let alone outperform this very early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
