THE HOUSEMARTINS
Il gruppo venne formato nel 1983 da Paul Heaton (voce), Stan Cullimore (chitarra), Ted Key (basso) e Chris Lang (batteria). La formazione non rimase stabile negli anni. Ted Key venne sostituito da Norman Cook — il futuro Fatboy Slim — e il batterista Chris Lang da Hugh Whitaker (ex batterista dei Gargoyles), poi a sua volta rimpiazzato da Dave Hemingway.
Pubblicarono due album, London 0 Hull 4 e The people who grinned themselves to death, e subito dopo lo scioglimento la raccolta Now that's what I call quite good contenente, oltre a pezzi presenti nei due album precedenti e singoli, anche altre canzoni, come le interpretazioni di You've got a friend (Carole King, portata al successo da James Taylor, 1971)
e di He ain't heavy, he's my brother (Hollies, 1969)
La band si sciolse nel 1988, ma i membri rimasero amici e collaborarono reciprocamente ai progetti degli altri. Norman Cook ha raggiunto un significativo successo prima con i Beats International e poi come Fatboy Slim, mentre Heaton, Hemingway e Sean Welch (tecnico degli Housemartins) hanno formato The Beautiful South. Stan Cullimore è diventato un apprezzato scrittore di libri per l'infanzia ed è anche autore di musiche per programmi tv per bambini. Ted Key insegna matematica.

The People Who Grinned Themselves to Death è il secondo album dei The Housemartins, e l'ultimo registrato in studio. Pubblicato nel 1987, ne sono stati estratti i singoli Five Get Over Excited, Me and the Farmer e Build.
