Rarity: Scarce. This copy more so as it includes BOTH the UK and American lyric insert sheets. Also a glossy 8-page booklet that I have never seen before. This gives details of the album and credits with on band picture. I cannot even find any information for this book on the Net.

Brief Info: Described as a “surreal parable in song and dance” by Robin Williamson, this was the seventh album by the Scottish psychedelic folk group the Incredible String Band. Conceived as a stage show with dance backing by the Stone Monkey. The shows proved a failure, so the album was made to retrive some costs and quickly recorded. Again it proved a flop in America, but did briefly chart in the UK. This a lovely UK original that includes both UK and US lyric insert sheets. Also included is a booklet as mentioned above, this I have never seen before and discovered inside the back of the album’s cover when purchased. For sure, this will rarely ever be seen or offered and a nice piece for this elusive album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England by MacNeill Press, includes the two 1170 date-coded inner sleeves. Also both UK and US lyric insert sheets and the 8-page booklet.

Cover Front: A little corner tip rubbing with any general rubbing or creasing very light. This retains excellent colour and has no sticker issues. So overall, this wear-prone front has fared well and stll looks attractive.

Cover Back: The back is largely the same, the lack of ugly penetrating ring wear is also a major plus on matt double album sets.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Little to fault inside, this is very nice.

Top Edges: Both straight, flat and flush with any rubbing very patchy and light.

Bottom Edges: As above but rubbing is more consistent and moderate.

Right Edge(s), and Type: These open storage edges are mostly sharp with any thickening little and light as seen viewed end-on.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression and folded square, so the edges meet up very closely together and parallel. The text is virtually unworn and strong as-seen.

Corners: Moderate tip rubbing with quite fine and respectable shape retained.

Cover Summary: The bottom storage edge and corner tip rubbing apart, still a strong example of this very wear-prone early 1970’s cover, one that could still prove difficult to find much better. With the most important faces still attractive, this item should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: NEAR EXCELLENT: the paper a little aged with the usual seam area adhesive toning. But minimal creasing, four neat window circles and the polylinings still quite fresh and clear. The edges naturally intact with just one minute mini-split to one, so small it barely even registers. These are date-coded 1170 (November 1970).

The English Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): this has two manufactured folds to make a gatefold lyric insert. This has little to fault with any creasing or ageing minimal and light. Printed in England with the UK catalogue number.

The American Lyric Insert: NEAR MINT: this has one manufactured fold to make a gatefold lyric insert. This has little to fault with barely any creasing or ageing. It has a very different, brighter colour shade compared to the UK version. Printed in the United States with the American catalogue number.

The Booklets: EXCELLENT(++): an 8-page booklet with a full-colour front cover, this printed on glossy paper and held together to two staples. The rear cover imprint is Ranelagh Press, Hampstead NW3. A lovely item, I can find no information on this at all and I have never seen one before. Possibly something from the stage show itself? It was discovered tucked inside the back cover when I purchased this record a few months ago. It is in superb condition and I would think a rarity.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) / (+): a very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers. Visually super records that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing equipment, all listed further down.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality psych-folk album plays mostly up to and even above it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is a very clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing noises. Three or four light clicks on side four, but considering the complex content and some quiet passages, this plays impressively clean and was a joy to play-grade. Few available copies will outperform this early first pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain these records have been played very lightly and have been carefully handled. Little of any other note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this unusual album. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.
