Never take any notice of received conventional wisdom because it is invariably wrong.

The Jam’s second album “This Is the Modern World” was released on November 18th 1977 – a mere six months after their debut album “In The City”. I had not heard it until this week (obviously I knew some of the songs) but I was led to believe that “This Is The Modern World” was the “difficult second album” – a disappointing turkey after a classic debut. Weak songs, rushed and not worth listening to. The Jam would redeem themselves with the brilliant “All Mod Cons” which came out a year later.

Well, those of you who have heard “This Is The Modern World” will know that this commonly held view is, in fact, bollocks, This album shows the Jam and Paul Weller moving away from the punk sound of the debut to create a new sound that took the best of classic 1960’s British Pop Music and Soul and Motown together with the energy of Punk and would turn The Jam into one of the great British bands. Rather than being a stiff, “This Is The Modern World” is a quantum leap forward.

Like all the six studio albums by The Jam, it is short – 12 tracks and 31:19 minutes. Two of the songs were written by Bruce Foxton, “In The Midnight Hour” is the soul classic and the remaining nine songs were written by Paul Weller with the exception of “In The Street Today” which he co-wrote with Dave Waller – who had been a member of The Jam between 1972-1973 as a rhythm guitarist.

The title track, which opens the album (OK it is actually called “The Modern World”) was issued as single in a sanitized version but only reached 36 in the charts. And that is odd because it is great. Bruce Foxton’s song “London Traffic” follows – sort of Beatleish. And it is nowhere near as bad lyrically as some would have us believe. In fact two top tunes to start the album. And “Standards” reminds me of The Who But it shows how good Paul Weller was getting. The production by Chris Parry and Vic Smith is also better than suggested. “Life From A Window” is another fine song but at this point I can see why “This Is The Modern World” got a kicking – it has a variety of tunes and insight replaces punk aggression. Fortunately, John Peel championed the album.

“The Combine” is another good one – the ending section is very like The Who and in a very good way – inspired by “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” as is Bruce Foxton’s “Don’t Tell Them You’re Sane” apparently. And is another fine contribution from Mr Foxton.

“In The Street Today” is more like the songs and sound of The Jam’s debut but it fits in well on “This Is The Modern World” as the opener of what was Side 2. “London Girl” is not the best thing here but it isn’t bad. “I Need You (For Someone) reminds me of something – can’t think of what it is but it is a fine 1960’s style pop song. Could be something by The Beatles. “Here Comes The Weekend” has Ready Steady Go! connotations but has a darker side – Weller was by this stage becoming a great lyricist as well as a writer of top tunes.

Mind you the next song “Tonight At Noon” should have given a co-credit To Adrian Henri. Clearly Paul had read “The Mersey Sound” anthology featuring poems by Henri, Brian Patten & Roger McGough.  This Penguin Modern Poetry Number 10 classic came out in 1967 was our bible and it is good to see that it affected the people who came after us. And it is the best track on the album. Adrian Henri gets a thanks for “foresight & inspiration” but should have got royalties – perhaps he did.

The album closes with a version of “The Midnight Hour”. It is good but the album shows how much The Jam did not need covers no matter how energetic by late 1977.

So “This Is The Modern World” – it is a great album and is not the “runt of the pack”. (Good sleeve notes from John Reed included in the booklet of this 1997 CD release.) Over the last week, I have played “This Is The Modern World” four times. It has taken almost 40 years for me to hear it and I need to make up for lost time!

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          White Promo Label version of this title is much rarer that a regular, commercially released, version of this title. We estimate that stock copies of this album outnumber promo copies by a ratio of at least 50:1.

(c)           The record comes in its original, custom, inner sleeve, which is UNIQUE to this album.

(d)            The record is  apparently pressed on a RELATIVELY  thick, inflexible vinyl. This is NOT a thin, flimsy ('dynaflex' type),  vinyl, but not the thickest, most rigid vinyl, either.

(e)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Minor discoloration (color fading) noted along the spine (VISIBLE ON FRONT SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1  (front side) and 2 (back side).

-         The cover has a few tiny scratch marks on the front side (BARELY VISIBLE)

-         Visible shelf wear noted on the seams

-         Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine    (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY)

-         Cover has three corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)

-         Cover has all four corners slightly worn / dinged / bent. (nothing significant)
