The J.B.'s second longplayer is built around one of the nastayest jams ever committed to vinyl.

Celebrating the return of Maceo Parker, this 10-minute long incessant stomp has it all: The grit and gravy of the Fred Thomas (bass)/Jabo Starks (drums) interaction, the hilarious adlibs by the Godfather himself, Fred Wesley's tantalizing trombone solo, Maceo's sax and flute adventures and an overall rawness that knock this sucker into any listener's subconscious. You can dig up the complete, 12-minute, unedited masterpiece on Funky Good Time: The Anthology.

In a similar vein is the equally funky "More Peas", another very loose jam inspired by "Pass the Peas". Kept in the pocket by a crisp, hypnotic guitar chank courtesy of Cheese Martin, the unedited version (available on the aforementioned comp) runs for 13 minutes.

Drummer John Jab 'O Starks digs into another super hard funk groove for the chant fest "La Di Da La Di Day", propelled by Fred Thomas' bass nibblin' and the Godfather's scatting.

A frantic, jazzy, Big Band vibe is apparent on "Sucker", which also features a great, drawn out conga break.

Strangely, vamps of "You Can Have Watergate (Just Give Me Some Bucks and I'll Be Straight") are interspersed between every track here, with the unedited, 6+ minute original closing this LP. The single-version (by far the funkiest) can only be found on the anthology CD.

·                               THE RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL  AS  (WEAK) NEAR MINT. Some VERY LIGHT AND SUPERFICIAL abrasions – mostly sleeve scuffs -  are (barely) visible, but are probably inaudible,  and do not affect visual integrity or beauty of the vinyl. The original luster is very much intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·                               THE COVER

THE COVER IS STILL IN ITS ORIGINAL ?SHRINK WRAP;  HOWEVER, WE ARE UNABLE TO GRADE IT NEAR MINT DUE TO MINOR FLAWS LISTED BELOW; WE GRADE THIS COVER AS EXCELLENT OR VG++

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a cutout corner.

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-        Cover has two corners slightly worn / frayed / bent (just a beginning of the split seam)

-        Cover has a tiny "wrinkle" (crease)  in one of the corners.

-        Minor shelf wear noted on the bottom seam (nothing significant)

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2  (VISIBLE ON BACK SIDE ONLY) .

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.
