Fuzz Garage Psych Classic 1967

          The Jelly Bean Bandits

Tapesty Records / Europe

Hard to find, only 500 remade in a thick jacket ... on the highly praised 'Tapestry' label...

What can one say, Mainstream Records released two dozen or so obscure psych rock albums between 1967 and 1971. If you're at all familiar with these you'll also know that The Jelly Bean Bandits' 1967 album Mainstream cat# S/6103 is in the top 5, that's right, TOP 5 of the best on that label. From the beginning verse of the first tune to the ending line in the last tune, this is a heavy dose of ear candy. Every tune is interesting and worth the price of admission with a jelly bean mix of garage rock, punk, R&B and psychedelia. Note that four of the band members sing and have distinct styles that lend well to The Bandits' sound. There are a lot of incredible ideas and solid songwriting scattered throughout this album.

1) Country Woman - This tune has an addictive beginning drum beat and is a deep bass groovin' tune with subtle Farfisa organ and bluesy guitar accents. Nice double track lead vocal gets the listener's attention. Doubt me? Put it on and anyone who has good taste in music will ask you, Who is that?

2) Generation - Another catchy groovin' tune here with rattling reverb springs, rippling farfisa and punky vocals: "your walls hold you, your folks mold you, generation".

3) Poor Precious Dreams - An example of a song that should have been longer with a little more experimentation. Starts out with the farfisa and a steady paced beat, but before you know it the song is over. Good ideas here, but not executed as well as this tune could have been. Interesting lyrics though: "Poor precious dreams fade like night moving shadows they fake reality but not for me.

4) Another August Revisited - This is basically a love song of a man who is lonely when his loved one is not present. This tune flows and it's done well with nice chord changes and harmonies. Just as good if not better than some of the more popular R&B influenced love ballads from the mid 60's that you hear on the oldies stations. This is an original written by these guys and NOT a cover. Good stuff.

5) Going Nowhere - Another catchy garage rock nugget similar to Paul Revere and Raiders or The Music Machine. Great beat and punk style vocals: "your life is comin' warm and lovin' when you're walking down the road that's going somewhere.

6) Happiness Girl - Not a bad song with an opening guitar riff that's clearly a variation of The Beatles "Day Tripper". A typical example of mid 60's boyfriend/girlfriend subject matter in garage rock ala, The Count Five. Note the fun tympani strike.

7) Goodtime Feeling - This tune has an oldtime country laid back feel and then goes into a nice rock changeup with punk style vocals. This is actually a fun song.
8) September Rain - More of a sad song than "Another August Revisited" that is done equally as well with a very good vocal track: "the soft winds of change, come with the season, September rain falls for no reason but it's own, she has gone, she has gone, but I must go on, for my love is gone like the rain....

9) Neon River - "I'm gonna clean out my mind of all my yesterday's thoughts, I'm gonna sell out my pockets of all the bad bargains that I've bought, I'm gonna bathe in the Neon River....". What else needs to be said? The Bandits finally kick it up a notch with this mind bending acid rock arrangement complete with regal tympani. The enlightenment one experiences after dabbling with hallucinogenics like in track #10.

10) Plastic Soldiers - This is the premier PSYCHEDELIC song on this whole album. Country Joe & The Fish, eat your heart out. Complete with double track vocals, tambourine and farfisa: "radishes aren't always red and the Jack of Knaves may loose his head on that, the heads of state will congregate for quick debate in Cheshire cats are cats and all that matters in the sky is written in a catapillar's eye, the secrets of the moon and the wisdom of the ages will be yours, the bandits love your mind and what remains of society is manure".

11) Say Mann - Say man, I think that jelly bean you gave me was laced with something?

12) Tapestries - Another short ditty with xylophone and a great vocal track: "take a trip with me and weave some tapestries of yesterday, bring your brush with you and paint some thoughts of blue and dabble gray".

So there you have it, The Jelly Bean Bandits is a classic obscure rarity on the Mainstream label. All in all a high quality professional reissue and made to look like an official Mainstream release  Highly recommended.
