About the artist:
Founded in 1965, the Johnny Thompson Singers have appeared with most of the Gospel greats such as Rev. James Cleveland, Evangelist Shirley Caesar, Dorothy Love-Coates, The Mighty Clouds Of Joy, Inez Andrews, Alex Bradford, Marion Williams, Bessie Griffin etc.
The Rev. John Alexander Thompson has not only been associated as pianist, singer and arranger with the famous "Stars Of Faith Of Black Nativity", but has led his own outstanding gospel group. After the initial success on the occasion of the first tour with his own "Singers" , with triumphant guest performances in Berlin, Zurich etc., in June 1971, it became clear, even for the most reserved members of the audience that this marked the start of a future full of successful tours. With natural fervour and intensity, these true exponents of the living, energetic Afro-American vocal and worship traditions can place the audience under their spell in such a manner that one can almost call it suggestive. This is all due largely to the fact that the Thompson Singers (with the exception of their leader) had little previous exposure to white audiences and therefore the particular musical heritage - the African form elements in rhythm and intonation - were usually always optimally balanced.
Relax and experience the joy of their performance: the emotional power which radiates from their interpretation, will be profoundly shared by everyone, as long as he or she is in the possession of a certain antenna or sensitivity for the Christian songs of the Afro-American. After attending a short guest performance by the Johnny Thompson Singers we were totally convinced that the interpretations can still influence in the deepest manner. From the musical point of view they still create, as ever, something integrated and mature which is in complete harmony with the text, facial expressions, gesticulations and faith of devout Christians. They are not ashamed to express their deep wonderment of God's power and goodness with their whole being. Equally fascinating and also moving is that these gospel songs, despite the large degree of freedom of individual interpretation in the hands of a gifted arranger like the Rev. Johnny Thomson possess a distinct cohesiveness achieved using an harmonically and rhythmically varied background to confer a perfection on the songs. Considered as a whole, this is totally without precedent for the white audience.
The Rev. Johnny Thompson is an artist who can be classed among the very best. One is tempted to say that he is able to demonstrate his abilities even better with "his" group than as a member of the "Stars Of Faith". He appears to be totally absorbed in his playing and his singing still maintains the full control over the musical and emotional happening. For the uninitiated this is a gift which borders on the miraculous
As a singer, the Rev. Johnny Thompson possesses an excellent voice which reminds one of the earlier gospel preachers. His unmistakable, dark "timbre" identifies him definitively as a typical gospel singer. Moreover for a number of years, he has proven that he is one of the most capable and creative composers and arrangers of spirituals and gospel songs. He has written for Shirley Caesar, Rev. James Cleveland, The Stars Of Faith and many others as well as his own group. He has also authored no less than nine complete gospel-song plays (musicals).
This 1976 LP is on "Glori Records".
