Freshly divorced, Naomi Judd (Diana Ellen Judd, 11 January 1946, Ashland, Kentucky, USA) moved with her daughters Wynonna (b. Christina Claire Ciminella, 30 May 1964, Ashland, Kentucky, USA) and Ashley from California back to Morrill, Kentucky, where she worked as a nurse in a local infirmary. Outside working and school hours, she and the children would sing anything from bluegrass to showbiz standards for their own amusement. However, when Wynonna nurtured aspirations to be a professional entertainer, her mother lent her encouragement, to the extent of moving the family to Nashville in 1979. Naomi’s contralto subtly underlined Wynonna’s tuneful drawl. While tending a hospitalized relation of RCA Records producer Brent Maher, Naomi elicited an audition in the company’s boardroom. With a hick surname and a past that read like a Judith Krantz novel, the Judds - so the executives considered - would have more than an even chance in the country market. An exploratory mini-album, which contained the show-stopping ‘John Deere Tractor’, proved the executives correct when, peaking at number 17, ‘Had A Dream’ was the harbinger of 1984’s ‘Mama He’s Crazy’, the first of many country chart-toppers for the duo. The Judds would also be accorded a historical footnote as the earliest commercial manifestation of the form’s ‘new tradition’ - a tag that implied the maintenance of respect for C&W’s elder statesmen. This was shown by the Judds’ adding their voices to Homecoming, the 1985 collaboration by Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins (who later co-wrote Naomi and Wynonna’s 1989 smash, ‘Let Me Tell You About Love’). The Judds’ repertoire also featured revivals of Ella Fitzgerald’s ‘Cow-Cow Boogie’, Elvis Presley’s ‘Don’t Be Cruel’ and Lee Dorsey’s ‘Working In A Coal Mine’. Self-composed songs included Naomi’s 1989 composition ‘Change Of Heart’, dedicated to her future second husband (and former Presley backing vocalist), Larry Strickland. Maher too contributed by co-penning hits such as 1984’s Grammy-winning ‘Why Not Me’, ‘Turn It Loose’, ‘Girls Night Out’ and the title track of the Judds’ second million-selling album, Rockin’ With The Rhythm Of The Rain. The team relied mainly on songsmiths such as Jamie O’Hara (‘Grandpa (Tell Me ’Bout The Good Old Days)’), Kenny O’Dell (‘Mama He’s Crazy’), Mickey Jupp, Graham Lyle and Troy Seals (‘Maybe Your Baby’s Got The Blues’) and Paul Kennerley (‘Have Mercy’, ‘Cry Myself To Sleep’).

Most Judds records exhibited an acoustic bias, particularly on the sultry ballads selected for 1986’s Give A Little Love. They also demonstrated a penchant for star guests that included the Jordanaires on ‘Don’t Be Cruel’, Emmylou Harris on ‘The Sweetest Gift’ (Heartland), Mark Knopfler on his ‘Water Of Love’ (River Of Time) and Bonnie Raitt playing slide guitar on Love Can Build A Bridge. In 1988, the pair became the first female country act to found their own booking agency (Pro-Tours) but a chronic liver disorder forced Naomi to retire from the concert stage two years later. Naomi and Wynonna toured America in a series of extravagant farewell concerts, before Wynonna was free - conveniently, cynics said - to begin her long-rumoured solo career. This she did in style, with a remarkable album that touched on gospel, soul and R&B, and confirmed her as one of the most distinctive and powerful female vocalists of her generation. In 1995, based on their lives, a film for television was made, Naomi & Wynonna: Love Can Build A Bridge. The book was written by Naomi Judd and Bud Schaetzle and it was directed by Bobby Roth.

In 1999, Wynonna reunited with her mother for a New Year’s Eve concert in Phoenix, Arizona. The following year the duo recorded four new tracks for a bonus disc issued with Wynonna’s New Day Dawning, and undertook a multi-city tour. The results were issued as Reunion Live. Often excellent but overly cloying, the album celebrated the achievements of the past rather than the possibilities for the future.

Exile, originally known as The Exiles, is an American band founded in Richmond, Kentucky by J.P. Pennington. They started by playing local clubs which led to touring with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars opening shows and providing backup for major rock artists of the period.

Their name was shortened to Exile in 1973, consisting of leader/guitarist Pennington, lead singer Jimmy Stokley, keyboardist Buzz Cornelison, bassist Kenny Weir, and drummer Bobby Johns.[2]

They hit the peak of their success in 1978 with the rock pop ballad hit "Kiss You All Over." After a couple of minor subsequent pop hits, they re-established in 1983 as a country music group. Between then and the early 1990s, the band had several country chart hits, including the Number Ones "Woke Up in Love", "I Don't Want to Be a Memory", "Give Me One More Chance", "Crazy For Your Love", "She's a Miracle", "Hang On to Your Heart", "I Could Get Used to You", "It'll Be Me", "She's Too Good to Be True" and "I Can't Get Close Enough". Although their chart success waned by 1991, they have continued to record ever since.

The country music version of the band included J.P. Pennington (guitar, lead vocals), Les Taylor (guitar, vocals), Sonny LeMaire (bass, vocals), Marlon Hargis (keyboards) and Steve Goetzman/Gary Freeman (drums). Their biggest hits, spanning from 1978 through 1987, included "Kiss You All Over", "Woke Up in Love", "She's a Miracle" and "Give Me One More Chance".

Pennington wrote many of the group's songs (often with LeMaire) and several were covered by other artists, including "The Closer You Get" and "Take Me Down", both covered by Alabama,"Heart and Soul", "It Ain't Easy Bein' Easy" covered by Janie Fricke and "Just In Case" by the Forester Sisters. "Kiss You All Over" was used in the 1996 Adam Sandler movie Happy Gilmore and in the 2006 film Employee of the Month. J.P. Pennington's songwriting talent led to recognition as BMI Writer of the Year to one of BMI's Top 100 Writers of the Century. His music has been recorded by Alabama, Janie Fricke, Kenny Rogers and other artists.

1980s Move to country music

When lead singer Stokley departed in 1980, he was replaced by singer/guitarist Les Taylor, who helped spearhead the group's transformation into a country band with a strong Southern rock flavor.  Solidified with the lineup of Pennington, Taylor, Lemaire, Goetzman and, Hargis, Exile saw a number of their songs become hits for other country acts, and followed that success to Nashville themselves. In 1983, they released their first country chart single, "High Cost Of Leaving" produced by legendary Nashville starmaker Buddy Killen, reaching the Top 40 at a respectable No. 27 on the country chart, then followed by a flurry of four successive No. 1 country singles in 1984, namely "Woke Up In Love," "I Don't Want To Be A Memory," "Give Me One More Chance" and "Crazy For Your Love". There were six more No. 1 country singles by 1987: "She's A Miracle," "Hang On To Your Heart," "I Could Get Used To You," "It'll Be Me," "She's Too Good To Be True" and "I Can't Get Close Enough" and numerous minor hits. Exile received 11 nominations for Vocal as well as Instrumental Group Of The Year from the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.

Meanwhile, original lead singer and band co-founder Jimmy Stokley died on August 13, 1985. An Associated Press obituary published in The Miami Herald on August 15, 1985  attributed his death at Pattie A. Clay Hospital in Richmond to complications from hepatitis. Stokley had been experiencing complications from hepatitis for over a year prior to his passing. In October 1984, the then-current members of Exile performed a benefit concert for him at Eastern Kentucky University to help Stokley pay for his medical expenses.
