Label/Format: Pye – matt surfaces with a gently textured feel.

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with spindle marks near moderate, but in context for such an album and age, these arguably can be considered reasonably light. Both playing surfaces are attractively clean and the record plays beautifully throughout. That no mean feat to say the very least when being played on a revealing Linn LP12.

Rarity: Scarce, and in anything like top condition, rare. These early mono popular/beat albums usually took a lot rough and heavy usage on the most basic of record players. This was the mono era where Dansettes and similar players tracked around 10 grams minimum. No wonder most are seen worn out, very badly marked, scratched and the sound ruined. This one has very few visual blemishes, no penetrating stylus scratches and plays beautifully throughout. The cover and even the inner sleeve in equally impressive conditions as seen. Such examples are now becoming rare and seldom surface like this.

The Kinks: Ray Davies – lead vocals, rhythm guitar, keyboards, harmonica; Dave Davies – lead guitar, backing and some lead vocals; Pete Quaife – bass guitar, backing vocals; Mick Avory – drums, tambourine.

Brief Info: The debut long player that launched The Kinks album career. Classic RnB of the ‘British Beat’ era, this is a vintage gem in superb condition. A mix of covers and original Davies material, this could hardly fail. Rarely seen or offered this clean, all elements of this set are impressive, mostly importantly, the sound is fantastic. I found nothing of note to fault with the music and vocals all clear, sharp with that fantastic warm mono punch and delivery. For fans of this brilliant band, this gem is essential.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): this more than fair for a cover most often seen in tatters. A single format with front laminate. This covers all the folds and ends on three rear external flipbacks. The main back panel is matt and quite smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with ‘Patents pending’ text. Includes the early Pye blue promotional inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with barely any trace of lifting. Any dulling very slight indeed around the thick record’s rim and label areas, this seen under light. A little rubbing to the corner tips, mostly light, but more more moderate on the lower right. The overall lack of creasing is impressive with only five half moons near the right edge area that are rarely avoided as the barest minimum. A couple of these are really small and faint, the others only a little larger, the lack of large major creases is a major plus on a cover this great age. The actual graphic looks fantastic with deep unaged colour and pure good looks as seen. This front sets a very high standard and will not prove easy to beat.

Cover Back: Again in very impressive condition. Moderately small tip rubs to the lower tips, but in terms of real wear, that’s about it. The main back panel has no rubbing or even ring wear. The card mostly clean with minimal discolouration, a small light tone near the left edge near the top.. This side has hardly any creasing at all, and that, unusually, includes the laminate on the three flipbacks. These are all solid and very clean with barely any end burring. The lack of grime and toning to the laminate ends is seldom seen. An impressive back to match the quality of the front.

Top Edge: Largely straight, smooth with barely any wear, and no chipping to the laminate.

Bottom Edge: As above, with just the rub to the right corner tip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with very little wear. Any thickening or burring light as seen viewed end-on. Again, this defies its age and emphasises the less than usual usage of the record that has been entered and removed with great care. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced, the laminate end on the front still very apparent and present.

Spine and Text: Superb – solid, quite straight with minimal compression or bowing. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the white surface unaged or darkened as seen. The laminate entirely smooth to the finger tip with no scuffs, cracks or abrasions.

Corners: Three have small tip rubs are small and light, the bottom right more moderate. Very fine, or better shape retained with no bashes.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this vintage 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors. Indeed it could prove a substantial upgrade for some.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(++): just one small, neat edge split repaired to stop it widening in future, it hardly even registers. This a Pye promotional inner that has the vintage tracing paper style lining that is fully intact. Minimal traces of creasing or even ageing, this is a lovely example. Any darkening of the paper gentle and light to just give that gentle clue to age. No writing or tearing, incredibly, even the top opening is crisp and sharp. These are seldom seen better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or better. This conservatively graded for a mono beat classic of immense age – as most collectors and fans will know, these are usually seen trashed – not putting too finer a point on it. A very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and heavily pressed. A copy played a few times for sure, but it appears with care and avoiding any arm drops, careless stylus placement or jolts. Any surface marks are few, light and faint as seen under bright light, it has avoided penetrating stylus scratches and plays very impressively throughout. Visually a lovely record that should please many, and maybe even most collectors, given the state many, if not most are seen in these days.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This magnificent album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything of note to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few early copies will outperform this significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on my Linn LP12 stereo turntable, although not issued in stereo, these vintage mono records were not really designed for higher-end equipment. But when found this clean, they sound fantastic on anything. To date, one of the finest all-round examples of t his title I have seen or heard. Nothing of any note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
