Label Conditions: All four ultra clean, fresh and highly attractive with a lovely sheen and lustre. Quite honestly, they all look as made with barely a spindle trace to be seen. Another from the collection purchased new by one owner who clearly hardly played his records, and if so, with due care.

Brief Artist & Album Info: The Kinks second album on RCA after departing from Pye. The previous Muswell Hillbillies was a very impressive album for the new label, and this one also keeps the standard high. A highly original and different sounding album. The title gives more than a clue of what to expect – show biz. The first record is a studio album, the second live with a Vaudeville flavour. It includes two great Kinks singles, I bought both when I was at school. ‘Supersonic Rocket Ship’, a moderate hit and the brilliant ‘Celluloid Heroes’, one of Davies greatest ever songs, his touching tribute to all those classic movie stars of the silver screen. Every song exudes class and Davies’ talent for writing them rarely diminishes. This is a rarer ultimate first pressed copy and both records play beautifully and devoid of any pressing issues – this never guaranteed on a label I have more than a few problems with over time. The cover and insert sheet are also fantastic, cover-protected from new by the one previous owner. Like those 1960s Pye classics, these early RCA albums of the 1970s are becoming increasingly more difficult to find and I have yet to find a better example than this – this really does come very close to reminding of new.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the lyric insert sheet and white inner sleeves.

Cover Front & Back: A cover rarely seen in this ultra fresh and hardly worn condition. Being cover-protected means this has little to fault and the difference is immediately apparent. A minute tip crease on the front top right being critical, that being the only one, any hint or rubbing or blemishes tiny and faint. No fading or sticker issues, both sides are exceptional with only a tiny trace of rim impression on the back left (look very hard). Few outer faces will be seen better on a cover highly intolerant of wear and light issues.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very impressive, pristine as issued.

Top Edges: Straight and flush with the only tiny rubbing on the right tips.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same again, just light very patchy rub traces on the back.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All edges are mainly very sharp and neat, any thickening very little and light. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Little short of Mint as-made, as-seen. Solid, straight with no compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel. The text is absolute perfection and superbly centred, the surface and folds have no fading, and that seldom seen on this cover.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is light with just the odd tiny tip crease. Better than excellent shape mostly retained. These vulnerable areas again will be very difficult to find better.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover seen almost as good as they get. It should please many, if not most collectors, indeed it could prove a major upgrade for some.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(+): one better still, one has a light corner crease. These original plain unlined inners have hardly aged, lacking the usual browning of the paper mostly which still remains fresh. Four crisp untorn window circles with no edge splits or repairs. These early ones have no text and are guaranteed original.

The Lyric Insert: PRACTICALLY MINT: A brightly coloured lyric sheet printed both sides. Totally unaged with barely a trace of creasing or handling. Fresh, clean with razor-sharp edges, they rarely get seen like this or better.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: MINT(–): arguably better. A fantastic visual pair that are ultra clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces ultra light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers and four fantastic fresh shiny labels. Visually gorgeous records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays up to and even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* or inherent pressing rasps or distortions. A label (after 1968) I have found very variable for pressing quality, but no issues with this double set. Few available copies will match, let alone outperform this -1E/-1E/-1E/-1E first pressing I feel sure. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful set – the studio set almost as good as they got for RCA. They will prove very difficult to find better and merits my highest recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams. Records are a ‘contact’ format, and few will avoid the odd minor sound blemish.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
