Brief Artist & Album Info: The Kinks second album on RCA after departing from Pye. The previous countryesque Muswell Hillbillies was a very impressive album for the new label, and this one also keeps the standard high. A highly original and different sounding album. The title gives more than a clue of what to expect – showbiz. The first record is a studio album, the second live with a Vaudeville flavour. It includes two great Kinks singles, I bought both when I was at school. ‘Supersonic Rocket Ship’, a moderate hit and the masterpiece ‘Celluloid Heroes’, one of Davies greatest ever songs, his touching tribute to all those classic movie stars of the silver screen. Every song exudes class and Davies’ talent for writing great songs rarely diminishes. This is a rarer ultimate first pressed copy and both records play beautifully and devoid of any pressing issues – this never guaranteed on a label I?have more than a few problems with over time. The cover gently aged, it so often does, but the records are exceptional with sound to match, the double-sided lyric insert sheet is also included. Like those 1960s Pye classics, these early RCA albums of the 1970s are becoming increasingly more difficult to find.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, includes the lyric insert sheet and white inner sleeves.

Cover Front: Mild rubbing and gentle surface marks mostly seen under light. Light rim arcs at the top and bottom and a quite light crease near the top left corner with modest visibility. Only slight grubbiness here-and-there with the odd small tone spot trace also. So this has aged a little, but still quite attractive for a cover that seldom wears well.

Cover Back: Mild rim impression/light darkening, but only at the very top has it started to penetrate the card to form the very beginnings of ring wear as such. This predominately solid green colour rarely escape often heavy full-on ring wear, so this has fared reasonably well. Again, gentle rubbing, a few light marks and grubbiness hint, but creasing this side largely avoided. There is a tiny pen mark near the top to the left of the catalogue number near the right corner.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Very impressive with hardly anything of note to fault as seen.

Top Edges: Straight and flat with little at all to fault.

Bottom Edges: Largely the same again with just a little rubbing near the ends.

Right Edge(s), and Type: All edges are still neat with any thickening modestly light and little. Records enter on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: The spine remains impressive with a little rubbing at the very ends, that minimal on the bottom one and traces on the lower fold here-and-there. Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded near square, so the edges meet up closely, but not quite parallel. The text close to perfect and well centred, the surface has no light fading which is quite unusual.

Corners: Most of any tip rubbing is light with just the odd tiny tip crease. Fine to very fine shape retained with no major knocks.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover, a little aged but still in fine condition. It should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT(–): these original plain unlined inners have also aged with browning of the white paper mostly near the sides. Four crisp untorn window circles, a little creasing ot one and no edge splits or repairs. These early ones have no text and are guaranteed original.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(­–): A brightly coloured lyric sheet printed both sides. A few light tone spots, mild discolouration and some creasing. No tearing and again still quite attractive. So like the rest, a little aged but intact and original.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): arguably better. A very fine visual pair that are very clean with equally fine shine and very solidly pressed. A copy appearing hardly played on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers and four fantastic fresh labels. Visually super records that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality album plays even above it’s high visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. A label (after 1968) I have found very variable for pressing quality, but no issues with this double set. Few available copies will outperform this -1E/-1E/-1E/-1E first pressing significantly I feel sure. The cover may be a little aged, but little to fault with the records. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful set. They will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
