Brief Artist & Album Info: The Kinks second album on RCA after departing from Pye. The previous countryesque Muswell Hillbillies was a very impressive album, but for me way surpassed by this highly original and different sounding album. The title will gives more than a clue of what to expect – showbiz. The first record is a studio album, the second live with a very Vaudeville flavour and sound. This set includes two great Kinks singles, I bought both when I was at school. ‘Supersonic Rocket Ship’, a moderate hit and the masterpiece ‘Celluloid Heroes’, one of Davies greatest ever songs, his touching tribute to all those classic movie stars of the silver screen. Every song exudes class and Davies’ talent for writing great songs rarely dimishes. This is a rarer ultimate first pressed copy and both records play beautifully and devoid of any pressing issues – this never guaranteed on a label I have more than a few problems with over time. The cover has a little wear and remains attractive, the double-sided lyric insert sheet is also included.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: and arguably better for an unlaminated gatefold format with matt, smooth surfaces. These rarely wear well and this no exception. Printed and made in England and includes the lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Little to fault on this front, and quite possibly the best I have seen for some considerable time. Slight rim impression, that seldom avoided on double sets, but the least you are likely to ever see. Any marks or blemishes tiny and faint and great colour retained with no ink erosion at all.

Cover Back: A smallish press mark seen under angled light and a rim impression near the bottom edge. Little else as per the front.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Superb with nothing to fault.

Top Edges: One tiny surface chip being ultra critical, that apart superbly straight and unworn.

Bottom Edges: Barely any wear to the front, the back with only fairly light rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with again, only minimal traces of wear. Any thickening, seen viewed end-on, minimal and very faint. Records entered on these edges that are guaranteed untrimmed.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with barely any compression and folded square, so the edges meet up closely and parallel. Tiny clipping to the catalogue details near the end, but all other text is perfect and unworn as seen in close-up. Even the delicate fold hinges retain all ink and this spine will never prove easy to find much better.

Corners: Small tip rubs, little else with very fine or better shape retained.

Cover Summary: A difficult cover still in very fine condition. It should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeves: EXCELLENT / EXCELLENT(+): these original plain white unlined inners have only gently aged with a little mildish discolour (one slightly more than the other). Four neat, crisp untorn window circles, minimal creasing and no edge splits or repairs. These early ones have no text and are guaranteed original.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(++): again colourful and very thin, this has little to fault with few handling traces, no tears or creasing of any real note. This can prove elusive and often missing altogether.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++) to NEAR MINT: any surface marks or blemishes are minuscule and this another superb album from the same recent lot I have been offering lately. A lovely visual pair that are very clean, fresh with fine shine and solidly pressed. The ultimate -1E (x4) first pressings and appearing barely used, they should please most-all collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Both records play up to their high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Even though played not more than once or twice, I take nothing for granted on RCA records at this time. But this offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Well pressed with hardly anything unwanted, any surface traces minuscule, this too being played on very sensitive equipment, including a Linn LP12 front-end, which I play ALL of my records on. All the reed instruments are pin-sharp with no clipping or distortions, never to be dismissed lightly on this label at this time. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading these impressive records – this is a very different Kinks sound and I enjoyed this immensely. This rare -1E first pressing will prove immensely difficult to find better and this merits my highest recommendation.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
