Label Conditions: Both very clean, attractive and retaining a fine freshness. Spindle marks are light to light+, and in terms of a mono record from this period, these can be considered way below average. No wear around the hole area and the spindle usage has minimal visibility with normal viewing, this to with somewhat revealing label design.

Cat Number: NPL 18191.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 150 grams. A very impressive weight.

Rarity: Rare: this album failed to chart and faired badly in the UK and the United States. This is one of the most elusive within the entire Kinks catalogue and those few that do surface are invariably trashed – especially the mono version.

Brief Info: The least lauded Kinks album within their Pye catalogue. It sold very poorly and can be regarded a genuinely rare. Recorded at Kelvin Hall in front a very enthusiastic teen audience – this album immediately brings back those sounds of ‘Beatlemania’ where hysterical female fans were almost as dominant as the music. This live set is very raw but has incredible atmosphere, but it received mixed reviews and failed to capture the record public’s attention in 1967 when so many had tuned their minds to ‘Sgt Pepper’ and the psychedelic sounds of the ‘Summer of Love’. An interesting set for Kinks fans for sure and one that will not be offered often, and especially so in this superb condition. By a huge distance, the best example I have ever seen or heard – that said – not seen too many of these. A rare opportunity to experience the early live sound of The Kinks and their fans of the day, you are unlikely to heard it a great deal better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with laminated front. This covers the closed edges and ends on three rear external flipbacks, this being the correct NPL mono cover. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse with the ‘Patents pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: A front that has aged little with few blemishes. Retaining a fine shine, freshness and clarity and with just a mild thumb surface crease near the right edge towards the bottom – barely any others at all. All fully adhered with no lifting or blisters and any friction rubs or dulling very light indeed, even when viewed under angled light. A very slight press line near the top edge and a tiny chip on the bottom fold, but for a cover now 44-years-old, this front has more than withstood the test-of-time - it looks terrific.

Cover Back: Almost against the odds, the back looks even more impressive and this on it’s own would be very close to Mint(-). Any traces of grubbiness or discolour is very light and faint indeed and with creasing on this unprotected matt card at all. Quite how it has survived without even a hint of a record pressmark is almost beyond me, but it has done just that. The flipbacks are very impressive indeed, the laminate ends are clearly seen being darker than the card, and the lack of grime-line formation makes them exceptional. No burring to the ends and certainly no damage. This back really is pretty exceptional.

Top Edge: Practically wear-free up to the corner tips.

Bottom Edge: As above with one small chip.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, quite sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. Any thickening or burr traces are modestly light but are lightly apparent with end-on viewing. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: A very impressive spine: solid, straight with minimal compression – the ends are gently tapered in manufacture. A rub is seen on the top corner but all text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate.

Corners: The corner tips have mainly small rubs – few will ever avoid this as the bare minimum. There are NO tip-ins or any enhancements on this cover whatsoever – I try to scrutinise all my covers as closely as possible, if I suspect of anything by previous owners, I will always clearly mention it. The corners retain very fine to excellent shape.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this rare original mono 60’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: a plain white tracing-paper-style lined inner. This has naturally crinkled with any discolouration very light indeed. All edges unsplit and the lining perfect as seen through two very neat, crisp window circles – just one small nick on one.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a super visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A copy with very modest plays on all the evidence with any surface marks light and faint – and in terms of a record like this – few. Merely very fine surface traces seen critically under angled light and NO penetrating scratches whatsoever. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rare Kinks record plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a raw and dynamic live sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Mostly loud and full-on with band and audience sound, few examples will offer cleaner repro of this still somewhat controversial album. Few copies will better with very clean mono example I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this elusive record. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
