THE LILAC TIME – Astronauts: Deluxe Edition. Needle Mythology NEMYLP 017. UK release. FACTORY SEALED NEW 3-LP VINYL RECORD SET. Originally issued in 1991. This edition issued in 2024 in a limited run of 1000 copies, pressed on 180g vinyl. Includes the 2024 re-master of Astronauts, an LP’s worth of the making of Astronauts, and a 3rd LP of live recordings from 1990/91. Comes in a heavy board stock double gatefold cover with a 16-page LP size linernote insert booklet. The front cover art is embossed red silver foil (the back cover is the same artwork but a standard print job). . All tracks have been mastered for vinyl by Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios

DESCRIPTION:  The Lilac Time’s fourth album, Astronauts, was released in 1991 at a moment when the left-field music zeitgeist was shaped by the shoegaze, baggy and grunge movements at their zenith. Astronauts conformed to none of those trends; nor was it the record Stephen had in his head, when he finally finished working on it. We’ll never know how that “mind palace” version of the record would have sounded, but it’s hard to imagine a better version of the album he did end up making. The songwriter who brought A Taste For Honey and Hats Off, Here Comes The Girl into the world envisaged the sort of choruses that would jump from the single speaker of your favourite transistor and lodge themselves into the collective memory bank. As Pete Paphides puts it in the notes which accompany the album “To fans who have returned to these songs over the years, Astronauts has come to be regarded as the indisputable masterpiece of The Lilac Time’s first incarnation. A record that was never quite of its time has, through the years, become truly timeless.”

On the second LP in this elaborate three-LP colossus, the profligate burst of creativity that yielded the songs on Astronauts is fully revealed, with a selection of demos laid down in Stephen’s Malvern house. With the windows open, the sound of everyday life – traffic and birdsong – seeping in somehow compounds the wistful qualities of the music that seemed to be pouring out of its creator at this point. Alongside soon-to-be favourites such as Dreaming, Madresfield and North Kensington are demos of two hitherto forgotten songs that Duffy chose not to bring into the studio: We Came From Anywhere and You Come By.

All LPs are removed from their jackets and placed outside of the jacket for shipping. If an album comes sealed (and will be noted as such in the above description), it will be shipped whole unless you request that I open it up to place the disc outside of the jacket for shipping. Both jacket and disc are placed inside of an outer plastic sleeve before packing for shipping. I use professional corrugated record mailers with inside packing.
