ORIGINAL

12” [VINYL] LP

ASHA RECORDING CO.

WASHINGTON, DC

?1970

Lloyd McNeill was originally commissioned to compose “Washington Suite” for the Doris Jones / Claire Haywood (Directors) “Capital Ballet Company" of Washington, DC. Recorded March 22, 1970 at the National Collection of Fine Arts and March 31, 1970 at Workshop-Corcoran. The recording was first released as a private-press album in 1970 on Lloyd McNeill and Robert Bialek’s DC based label, Asha Records. I believe you can authenticate the originality (small press run) of this LP by the address 1340 Connecticut Ave, N.W., Washington, DC, which is highlighted in the last photo. This album has been re-issued on vinyl and CD by a Japanese label, which is why so many copies appear to have been sold on eBay. Mr McNeill is an African-American flautist, painter, poet and photographer born in DC in 1935. His multi-disciplinary creative life led to encounters and friendships with Nina Simone, Picasso, Eric Dolphy, Nana Vasconceles and other legendary cultural figures. Mr. McNeill grew up through the era of the Civi Rights Movement in the 1960s and his life and work is a reflection of those ideals.

CONDITION: This record is from my private collection: Vinyl is in EXCELLENT (EX) condition on the eBay scale, perhaps a strong VG++ on another scale, some but not much crackling, side 2, track 1 (piccolo) has 4-5 pops, that repeat again one time, tested and plays well, shipped in plastic lined inner sleeve; Cover appears VERY GOOD PLUS (VG+), showing some wear, photos show actual item so for best view, please super-size photos at top left of this ad, which are considered part of this description.

<The last photo shows an original Lloyd McNeill lithograph (#1 of 20), pictured on the cover of Mr. McNeill’s first album “ASHA”, which is for sale separately. Inquires invited.>
