On offer is 1967 LP by THE LONDON JAZZ FOUR called TAKE A NEW LOOK AT THE BEATLES on POLYDOR, catalogue no. 582 005.
There are many jazz covers of Beatles songs and most have the slightly grudging, desperate air of the old-timer trying to keep up with the new thing. Not so this album of Beatles covers by The London Jazz Four, who tackle those familiar themes with imagination and wit. The London Jazz Four were Mike McNaught, Ron Forbes, Brian Moore and Len Clarke, on respectively, piano, vibes, bass and drums. I’m guessing that their household gods, alongside Lennon and McCartney, were John Lewis and Milt Jackson. They share some of MJQ’s genius for reinvention. ’Rain’ is gently mesmerising. But bright chamber jazz is the default mode, and ‘Please Please Me’ and ‘Yellow Submarine’ make unexpected good vehicles for swinging.
The chief drawback from a collector’s viewpoint is the inscription on the b-side of the label which reads, “To Matt, HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOVE DAD & SEAN”. See photo. There’s an arc-like light crease in the laminate on the front and the same shape re-appears on the back. The names of the four musicians are underlined in biro when they first appear in Steve Race’s sleeve-notes.
On the credit side, the vinyl is a confident EXCELLENT. Matt’s tastes probably leaned more to Beatles than MJQ.
In short, the vinyl grades a Record Collector EXCELLENT and the sleeve is VERY GOOD .
