Description
This is a VERY RARE ORIGINAL VINYL LP of The Million Dollar Quartet released in 1981 by Charly/Sun Records issue 1006. Very rare as it was limited due to a lawsuit by RCA against SUN claiming that RCA owned Elvis' voice.
These were the first release of impromptu jam sessions at Sun Records Studios on December 4th, 1956 with Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, and Johnny Cash. It was arguably the first supergroup.
It took 30 years for any of these recordings saw the light of day and when they did, RCA slapped a lawsuit on SUN as they claimed they owned Elvis voice so this initial release was quite limited.
Other releases came later in 1987 and 1990 was an agreement was made with RCA.
History:
In 1969, Shelby Singleton bought Sun Records. He began a long search of the Sun catalogue, browsing through more than 10,000 hours of tape.
At the same time, Singleton licensed much, if not all, of the Sun catalogue to the English Charly label for reissue in Europe. As a result of Singleton’s and Charly's search of the Sun catalogue, a portion of the session came to light. This was issued in Europe in 1981 as "Charly/Sun" LP #1006 The Million Dollar Quartet, and it contained seventeen tracks, focusing on gospel/spiritual music from the session.
This was a album that took nearly 30 years to release by Sun, in fact when they did finally release it RCA slapped a lawsuit against them as they claimed they owned Elvis' voice. The distribution of this Sun LP was limted because of the problems and so it quite rare today.
Condition:
The cover is in VG condition for it's age. Some wear around the edges and on the spine but no splitting. The vinyl is in EX condition.
