QUITE SIMPLY, this record is some of the hottest, stompingest, most smile-inducing, satisfying jazz - or music of any kind - you will ever hear. It's the very record which, in fact, turned me on to hot jazz when I was sixteen, and alerted me to the existence of Harlem Stride piano. It set my clock! I've never looked back!
It's "THE MINOR DRAG" and "HARLEM FUSS" by "FATS" WALLER AND HIS BUDDIES. They are an amazing quintet, sounding like ten tall men. It's SO much greater than the sum of its parts. The whole band is: CHARLIE GAINES (trumpet), CHARLIE IRVIS (trombone), ARVILLE HARRIS (tenor sax and clarinet), THOMAS "FATS" WALLER (piano), EDDIE CONDON (banjo).
The secret weapon in the group is Fats' left hand! It's a band in itself, with its walloping bass lines, accuracy and rock-solidness of touch, and uncanny, cosmic timing. Condon's banjo is nice, but Fats carries EVERYONE with that left hand, and he's KILLIN' us with his right! Both sides will leave you slack-jawed in giddy admiration.
This original 1939 Bluebird B-10185, a re-issue of the 1929 Victor sides, is in solid EE- condition. It's master-pressed, on even BETTER shellac than they had in 1929, so it sounds that much better. A teensy bit of wear.

I always post at least four clear images, showing the record fore and aft, a close-up of the label, and the whole disc, warts and all. If my purple prose won’t cut it, the pictures will!
