THE MIRACLES
Debut single (1958)
It was the summer of 1958, and Berry Gordy, Jr. was still two years from launching Motown Records. But he was learning the craft of running a label, by writing and producing records then leasing them to other labels. He worked with Marv Johnson, Jackie Wilson and many other musicians. Once he started up Motown, several of them would come record for him there. This is one of those success stories.
This single from the Miracles is from the summer of 1958.
They started out as a high school group called the Five Chimes in Detroit. They added (and lost) a few members and were now called the Matadors. It was 1956. They got an audition for Brunswick Records and were turned down, but one of the songwriters working for Jackie Wilson at Brunswick was hanging around. That was Berry Gordy, Jr. He liked the group and started working with them. By now, they were called The Miracles.
Gordy produced their first single, "Got a Job," (an answer to the Silhouettes' "Get a Job") which was issued by End Records in Fbruary of 1958. They would cut another for End then move over to Chess for their single "Bad Girl" which would serve as the launch for Gordy's new Motown/Tamla label.
So here you have The Miracles at square one. This original End 45 is flipped with “My Mama Done Told Me.”
