Essential Modern Lovers lp on Beserkely Records (distrib by Janus/GRT)  Vinyl:   Ex Cover:  VG+ to Ex

NOTES: The first Modern Lovers album was cobbled together by Beserkley supremo Matthew King Kaufman from demos, the bulk of which had been produced by John Cale in 1972 when it looked as if the band would be signed to Warner Bros. Despite the fragmentary nature of its parts, The Modern Lovers is surprisingly coherent and contains all of Richman's classic creations: "Roadrunner," "Pablo Picasso," "Girl Friend," "She Cracked," etc. The stark, simple performances highlight an adenoidal New England voice that lacks everything technical but nothing emotional. One of the truly great art-rock albums of all time.

"There have been many bedroom-bands. But few have come close to capturing the mystery, misery and ecstasy of the bedroom quite as tellingly as In Embrace.

Born in the villages of Leicestershire as an organic synth duo in 1982, Gary Knight and Cameron Lindo's moody debut mini-album, 'The Initial Caress'(Glass Records) received notable airplay by John Peel. The first proper album 'Passionfruit Pastels' was a more kaleidoscopic spin on their 'Simon & Garfunkel meets Eyeless In Gaza' sound.

Gary and Cameron then went their separate ways, Gary continuing to record and perform solo as In Embrace for the next single ' The Living Daylights' before recruiting Richard Formby (Jazz Butcher, Spectrum, Dakota Suite).Richard brought a more confident guitar-driven sound to Gary's increasingly wicked words. The second album 'Too' (Glass) was leaner, harder but no less unique. Highly praised in the now-defunct 'Sounds' and 'ZigZag' it remains something of a lost treasure.

The insanely upbeat and totally atypical 'Your Heaven Scent' single was hailed 'Single of the Month' in ZigZag. And with a big show supporting The Style Council at the Apollo Theatre in Coventry, a full-time drummer in Joby Palmer (Pre-Eyeless In Gaza)and Stephen Rees (ex-Tuffs) on bass, IE looked in danger of getting serious as an indie pop-rock band.
