The Monkees continued to press for more artistic freedom and they were now enthusiastically working on a feature film Head. This was directed by Bob Rafelson assisted by Jack Nicholson for Columbia Pictures. Whilst all this was going on there were signs of a downturn in their popularity. In June 1968 their TV series, which had run successfully since its inception was scrapped, and the following month their revival of The Coasters' D.W. Washburn made only No. 19 in the U.S. Charts and No. 17 in the UK. The follow up Porpoise Song peaked at just 62 in the U.S. and didn't chart in the U.K. at all. Head was the most relevant of their projects in terms of this book but in box office terms it was a disaster. Far from the standard teen film they had expected Columbia found themselves presented with an imaginative, bizarre and disjointed mixture including scenes of the band committing suicide by jumping from a bridge and a concert intercut with Vietnam war atrocities. The album only managed No. 45 in the LP charts; despite its relatively disappointing commercial showing the album was by far the group's most creative and interesting venture. After this the band began to slowly disintegrate.
The Head project did receive more acclaim in retrospect. In March 1977, in response to cult demand, the U.K. National Film Theatre imported a copy of the film and it ran for a season in London's Electric Cinema.
