Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with only light, fine and faint spindle marks and no wear around the hole area. A small few tiny black ink spots in manufacture on side one, hardly unusual and perfectly natural.

Original Year of Release: 10th November 1967 – exactly 10 years after I was born. So this album celebrates its 50th birthday the same day I celebrate my 60th.

Brief Info: The second album by The Moody Blues following the RnB debut, the style of the debut very different to what was to follow. The original guitarist and singer Denny Laine, also bassist Clint Warwick left the group in 1966, and were replaced by Justin Hayward and John Lodge respectively. This line-up remained stable into the 1970s and produced some stunning albums. But ‘Days of Future Passed’ proved as groundbreaking as any during the 1960s. It included a full orchestra and blended elements of psychedelic pop with a new form of ‘art’ rock – many consider it as the true beginning of ‘progressive’ rock. Also the album was produced to the highest standard using a technique called the ‘Deramic Sound System’ which expanded the dynamic range and fidelity of the music to give a new experience for the listener. It was also one of the very first concept rock albums, the theme follows the periods of a single day in music, poetry and beautiful orchestration. A band with a superb new vocalist in Hayward and magnificent creative musicians, this album opened a whole new sound to rock loving audiences of the time. It charted at a modest 27 in the UK even though including two classic singles in ‘Tuesday Afternoon’ and the sublime ‘Nights in White Satin’ (the song I chose to be played at my wedding in 1984). This is a lovely early stereo copy that appears little used. Both cover and record are impressive and it plays very well indeed. A very challenging album with some very quiet passages, so total silence is near impossible for any record of this type and age, but this has little unwanted, any contact sound is gentle, light and infrequent, just traces to politely remind of what is actually being played. A true classic which opened the door for more new bands to expand this new style of music further and this legendary album does it more than strong justice.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): a single format with the front laminated with Clarifoil. This covers all the folds and ends on the smooth back via the spine. The main back panel is matt. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker Ltd, includes the Decca-style polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: A beautiful front with little to fault. The laminate retains excellent shine, freshness and clarity with no lifting, just one light half moon laminate crease that shows little and any dulling minimal and faint seen under light around the rim area. The pinched spine ends (seen in close-up) give the ends a lovely neat flat appearance and the right laminate end line area is white, unworn and wide. Fantastic psychedelic artwork with no fading and as bright and vivid as when issued. Just holding this classic cover gives pleasure.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive, even given how much is white, this appears hardly aged at all. Any grubbiness or discolouration bordering on minuscule, few very early copies of this will be found better. The lack of creasing, ring wear and browning are all massive pluses for a cover this age and type.

Top Edge: Thin, but still straight, smooth and unworn with full laminate cover.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above, any thickening to the card end panel is minimal and light. This storage edge has fared very well overall.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, mostly sharp with hardly any wear, any thickening or burring minimal and light as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, as stated, the ends are deeply pinched in manufacture, these delicate areas retaining superb shape as seen in close-up. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked laminate, the surface undarkened or affected by light.

Corners: Tip rubbing has been avoided and all retain excellent or better shape retained with no knocks or dinks worthy of mention.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this famous 1960’s cover, one that will prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors, it could even prove a substantial upgrade for many.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: only marked down a little for natural ageing, this being the usual darkening of the seam area adhesive. That apart, little else to fault, both window circles crisp and undamaged, the polylining attached and still quite clear. Hardly creased and all edges unsplit with no repairs. This is British patented with ‘Foreign patents pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and typically solidly pressed by Decca. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface traces few, very light and faint as seen critically under bright light. No penetrating stylus scratches, viewed in average room light, barely anything even registers. This has to be one of the very best looking original copies I have seen for years. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: Now half-a-century old, this groundbreaking classic album plays up to it’s high visual grading with little to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A landmark recording for rock music, beautifully produced and engineered and even today, this still sounds impressive. Any surface sounds are minimal, light and infrequent – an album with several very quiet passages – any very early copy will be hard pressed to better this one significantly, and very few surface that will ever play ‘silent’. A little-used copy of this album is crucial to have any real chance of sounding great on modern hi-fi equipment. Any heavy tracking or careless handling using the vintage record players of the time, and that beautiful crisp sound will lose clarity and introduce unwanted noise. This is such a delicate album that is easily ruined, thus finding such a little used example is never to be dismissed or taken for granted. An album that shows up, but invariably originals are rendered unlistenable these days, or they are simply later examples. This is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues* and has no repetitive clicks or clarity loss. Few available copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and has been generally well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, the odd tiny reminder of what is being played has to be expected for a complex and at times quiet album. This will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended – and happy birthday to one of the greatest albums ever made.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
