Brief Info: The magnificent sixth album by the Moody Blues, again featuring beautiful cover artwork. An album with an even more ‘progressive’ feel and the level of musicianship rises again still further. This album was the last to feature the mellotron, it was replaced by the Chamberlin (a device that uses recorded tape to generate sound) on the 1972 album Seventh Sojourn. Lovely sound and a solid Threshold pressing – a subsidiary of Decca Records – you would expect little else. For me, one of the greatest British bands ever, every album they made up to ‘Sojourn’ is a classic and their popularity was fully justified, every good boy deserves a copy of all their albums, all are equally essential – this one, arguably, slightly less commercial than previous.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: an unlaminated gatefold format with the front and back finely textured and made with a soft, fairly thin card – all the ingredients for damage and wear. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes the original 1971 date-coded inner sleeve and graphic/lyric insert sheet.

Cover Front: Not only did the Moody Blues offer some of the finest music of the 1960s and into the 1970s, their covers were also of the highest quality as well. One of the classic covers within the ‘progressive’ genre and a genuine work-of-art, this front does it fine justice. Clearly prone to all forms of wear, this is more often seen very rubbed, creased, grubby and tatty, often ruined by ring wear. Lovely texturing and colour, the artwork looks lovely. Only a very gentle hint of rubbing near the edges with any of the few creases gentle, fine and light. No breaking of the ink and they show very little. Generally clean and still with fine freshness with no sticker tears – another issue that can affect this one badly. An attractive looking front that only gives scant clues of age.

Cover Back: The perilous back is even better if anything, the graphic correctly appears duller as the two boys are more distant from the front light source. The impressive news is the lack of ring wear and fading, a gentle rub near the top near the inner seam which is rarely avoided as barest minimum. This unforgiving back could also prove difficult to find a great deal better.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Barely anything to fault.

Top Edges:Both straight, flat and flush with minimal hint or wear.

Bottom Edges: Again straight, the back with minimal wear, the front light to moderate patchy rubbing, this seldom avoided on softer card storage edges.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, and both very sharp with minimal traces of wear or thickening, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on either as both are naturally open.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression, but a gentle tilt to right. Soft card gatefold spines are notoriously fragile and are often seen crushed or flattened. Folded very close to square so the edges meet up near flush. A little surface crinkle, but any rubbing little and very light. The text matter present with barely any rubbing.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubbing, again, soft card makes them extra vulnerable and susceptible. Fine to very fine shape largely retained with no bashes, any hint of dinking minimal.

Cover Summary: One of the great covers, an inspired work by Phil Travers and this is one that can still be held and enjoyed – yes a little rubbing, but mostly to the bottom edge and corner tips. Never underestimate how difficult this one is to find even in near excellent condition. Many collectors will be please with this one.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the original blue lined Decca type has the ‘UK Patents Applications No’ and ‘Foreign patents pending’ text and is date coded 8-71 (August 1971). The polylining is very clean and ultra clear as seen through two pristine undamaged window circles. A little light creasing, the paper with minimal discolouration, so still quite fresh. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: NEAR EXCELLENT: lyrics one side, a graphic on the other as seen. The text side has a small surface pull, so thinned a little, this near the top and NOT on the text, so any detail is not lost. Also a single pin hole on the top corner areas, so the original owner mounted this. A fine vertical crease also, but little else to fault and still an attractive insert.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: and arguably better still. A very fine visual copy that is very clean with lively shine and very solidly pressed. A quality Decca pressing, a record company that rarely fail to please with top quality pressings standards (if only all records could have been pressed by this company). A copy very modestly played on all the evidence with any surface trace marks ultra fine and wispy as seen with scrutiny under bright angled light, there are no penetrating stylus scratches and the record plays with lovely clean sound. Viewed in average room light, hardly anything even registers, visually one to please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful album plays even above it’s impressive visual grading with hardly anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound with no tracking issues*. Like the early Deram albums, this is a wonderful, top quality pressing and for most all sounds magnificent. An album that does have some quiet passages but little unwanted heard and my play-grade was a real pleasure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played little and has been generally quite well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this timeless classic, the odd faint tick on such material near impossible to avoid totally, especially being played on very revealing equipment. This early prog classic should please many collectors.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
