Rarity: Moderately scarce: for me, the least seen of the early classic Moody Blues albums. Never easy to find with a little worn cover either.

Brief Info: The magnificent sixth album by the Moody Blues, again featuring truly beautiful cover artwork. An album with an even more ‘progressive’ feel and the level of musicianship rises again still further. This album was the last to feature the mellotron, it was replaced by the Chamberlin (a device that uses recorded tape to generate sound) on the 1972 album Seventh Sojourn. Lovely sound and a solid Threshold pressing – a subsidiary of Decca Records – you would expect little else. For me, one of the greatest British bands ever, every album they made up to ‘Sojourn’ is a classic and their popularity was fully justified, every good boy deserves a copy of all their albums, all are equally essential.

Cover’s Potential for Wear: Very high: this is a delicate and fragile cover but when seen at somewhere near its best, it’s a thing of great beauty. This does however wear badly if ill-treated or poorly stored and more often seen faded, rubbed, heavily ring worn and sometimes even torn.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(++): an unlaminated gatefold format with the front and back including finely textured surfaces and made with a very soft and fairly thin card – all the ingredients for damage and wear. The inside is smooth. Printed and made in England by Robert Stace and includes the original lyric-picture insert.

Cover Front: One of the classic covers within the ‘progressive’ genre and this front does it near full justice. This is clean, fresh and unfaded with no creases. The lack of rubbing or speckle (rubbing to the raised spot areas) is unusual, but most welcome. If my picture seems to show any – there isn’t – it is due to camera flash reflection. This retains superb rich colour and any surface marks, even under light, are minuscule. I have rarely, if ever, seen this front better.

Cover Back: The back is largely similar again with just a little rim impression, but NOT rubbed or ring worn. With a 150 gram record inside for 40 or so years, avoiding this as a bare minimum is near impossible. Both sides are very difficult – both are superb.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Immaculate and as made with nothing to fault.

Top Edges: Barely even a hint of wear or rubbing, both straight and flat as well.

Bottom Edges: Same again, any thickening to the rear panel end is very light indeed.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, sharp with minimal traces of wear and barely any thickening or burring, both guaranteed untrimmed. Record enters on either as both are open.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. Folded square so the edges meet up perfectly together and parallel. All text is perfect and unworn and just one tiny surface chip on the bottom fold. In fact, and quite umusually, both folds are nigh-on perfect and devoid of the rubbing to the soft card.

Corners: Any tip rubbing is small and light – the extra vulnerable spine pair have hardly any. Very fine to excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: One of the great covers, an inspired work by Phil Travers and this is one to view not hide away. Never underestimate how difficult this one is to find even in excellent condition – and this one better. This sleeve with so little overall wear and freshness is a thing of beauty and most collectors will enjoy it.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(+): the original blue lined Decca type has the ‘UK Patents Applications No’ text and is date coded 6-71 (as seen in close-up). The lining is very clean and clear as seen through two pristine undamaged window circles. Any creasing few and light and just light darkening to the seam adhesive which is almost the norm. All edges are unsplit with no repairs.

The Lyric Insert: MINT(-): clean with sharp edges and no marks or creases of any note. Printed on both sides with lyrics on one, a picture on the other.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): a very impressive visual copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. A quality Decca pressing, a record company that rarely failed to please with top quality standards. A copy very lightly played on all the evidence with any surface traces tiny, very few and faint even with scrutiny under bright angled light. Visually a super record that should please most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This beautiful album plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Like the early Deram albums, this is a wonderful, top quality pressing and sounds magnificent. An album that does have some quiet passages but little unwanted heard and my play-grade was a real pleasure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I feel very sure this record has been played little and has been clearly well stored and carefully handled, almost certainly in a non-smoking environment. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this timeless classic, I can hardly get enough of this band and they are regularly played at home and in my car. This copy could prove difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
