Description
This is the original 1965 mono pressing of this record, catalogue number 1004. It has the red label and the back cover has just the track listings and recording details. Later re pressings had images of other ESP records, showing issues 1001 to 28. I bought it new in the late 60's from an import shop in Melbourne(Discurio's) which was one of the few shops that bothered to import these records, if they didn't have it they would order it from overseas for you. It was the fourth record released by the ESP-DISK' label and followed two other early free jazz releases, (Albert Ayler -"Spiritual Unity" 1002 and Pharoah Sanders - "Pharoah's First" 1003) giving momentum the musical direction that was to be followed by artists on this label. The leaders of the group; Roswell Rudd on trombone and John Tchicai on sax have a great rapport and sense of each other's direction as the music evolves, whether playing in unison or soloing, but it is held together and occasionaly given direction by the skilled drumming of Milford Graves, and the bass playing of Lewis Worrell. The record is given a unique bonus with the inclusion of the recitation of the poem "Black Dada Nihilismus" by Amiri Baraka who was then known as and credited on the record as Leroi Jones. If you are not familiar with this sub-genre of jazz, there are audio clips of some of the tracks on this record on you tube. The vinyl on both sides is shiny,but there are numerous fine scuffs and marks (there are some marks which I think are the result of putting the record back in its cover while it was still wet after cleaning, these marks don't affect the playing). However, after listening to the whole record through Sennheiser headphones, there is some low level surface noise audible throughout the record, most noticeable during the quieter sections, not heard when the full band is playing. I would rate this noise as 1 to 2 out of 10 and I don't regard it as compromising the enjoyment of the music. There are no deep scratches, jumps or skips, and I have graded the vinyl as G+ due to its appearance. The cover is a thick black textured cardboard, over which the front and back graphics have been stuck on. There is some yellowing along the spine and the front and back near the spine from years of storage, but there is no writing, no stickers, and there are no tears or splits. I have graded the cover as G+ also.
N.B. The track listing on the B side on both the cover and the label is round the wrong way. The first track on the B side is "No. 6", which runs for 8:07 mins. and the second track is "Rosmosis" which runs for 14:48 mins. ("Rosmosis" is a notable track by Roswell Rudd, during which he uses a plunger mute to achieve variations in the trombone's sound. )
