Description
The Other Half saga starts with “The Fender IV” in Baltimore, Maryland. Randy Holden was lead guitar and they had a surf rock instrumental sound influenced by “Dick Dale” and “The Ventures”. Randy convinced the band to move to Southern, California to gain a more receptive audience. Discovered by “Kim Fowley”, they were renamed the “Sons Of Adam” and with the wane of “surf music” Kim got them gigs on “The Sunset Strip”. “Beatlemania” was in full force and the songs changed direction. A few psychedelic singles were released and Randy was gaining notice as a guitarist to watch. The Sons Of Adam opened for the “Rolling Stones” at the “Long Beach Sports Arena” and Randy was in awe of Keith Richards and the sound he got from the amps. He started experimenting with feedback and preamps. Then, after Jeff Beck left “The Yardbirds, he was offered the job as Jeff’s replacement. But, things didn’t work out. Randy wanted to play his own material and eventually left The Sons Of Adam to play guitar with another established LA band “The Other Half”. This band wound up moving to San Francisco at the height of “flower power” and the “summer of love”. They were mainstays at “The Avalon Ballroom” and “The Family Dog” and were heavily influenced by “The Yardbirds” and “The Rolling Stones”. The one album they made has all the west coast vibes with the heavy guitar by Randy. Their best-known song was "Mr. Pharmacist” that was only put out as a single, but was not included on the album. Randy was disappointed with the album production. The concerts they put on were extremely loud and featured Randy and his wild experiments on guitar. It’s said that “Blue Cheer” was influenced heavily by the ear-shattering loudness of “The Other Half. Wanting to make his mark, Randy left the band and was replaced by Craig Tarwater who was formerly with “The Daily Flash”. The Other Half only lasted a few more months and then fell apart. Randy then joined “Blue Cheer” replacing “Leigh Stevens” and toured nationally with them for about a year. They began recording their third album “New! Improved!”, but Randy found out that he wasn’t under contract and wasn’t going to be paid, so he left in major disappointment. He then recorded an album called “Population II”, was sponsored by “Sunn” Amplifiers and had all the power wattage he wanted and more. But, things fell apart in a hurry. The album contract had no “guarantee release” clause, so it sat dormant. Then Sunn amps pulled the plug. Randy went bankrupt and left playing any music for over 25 years. But, he came back after a “rabid fan” refused to let his hero die and convinced Randy to come back with a vengeance. He has re-mastered many of his previously recorded works and released new material available on his website.
The Cover has some wear with taped seams, but not terrible. The Record plays with some ticks more noticeable between cuts and has some visible marks, but overall a very playable copy.
